Payment flow is crap when more than one account

Issue:
Payment flow is crap when more than one account

Details to reproduce:
Transfer funds from own account to joint.
Switch into joint account.
Click payments and add the new payment details and make payment after checking recipient.
Swear loudly at monzo because the funds are taken from own account as it was account in the drop down at the top.
When I switch accounts I would assume that it would be reflected when making a payment.

iOS
Device:
iPhone 14

This isn’t an account switcher. With this I assume you’re tapping the card on the home screen to expand the transaction list? Because that’s all it does.

If you want to send a payment from your joint account the steps are:

PAYMENT TAB > SWITCH TO JOINT (top of screen) > PAY SOMEONE

Or you can skip the second step and do it this way:

PAYMENT TAB > PAY SOMEONE > Then tap the 3 dots next to your personal account and change it to your joint account

The last step here is essentially the confirmation screen which can be seen whichever route you go.

I agree with the OP that if you’re in a particular account, and hit the payments tab, it would be reasonable to assume the account you were in would be the default “pay from” account.

It’s caught me out more than once or twice.

I remember this being an issue, but didn’t this get fixed and now the payment screen shows you the account the payment is coming from with the option to change it?

Yes, you can change to an eligible funding account just prior to making a payment.

Like I said the flow is not intuitive when I make a transfer say 4 times a year i.e. not in muscle memory. The confirmation payment screen after all the screens before (3 or 4 perhaps) is a “phew got through it and yep that’s where it needs to go”. I suppose my thought process when making a payment is “as a user I want to make a payment from my joint account to joe blogs for £20” and not “I want to pay Joe blogs £20 from my joint account”. That’s the diff for me.

Isn’t this quite obvious? It used to be a lot worse!

Not really. I just tried it by paying an existing recipient so only 1 screen but that field just does not jump out and again I was in my joint account and it defaults to my personal. It requires me to have to check something extra in addition to the recipient (crucial) and the amount (crucial).

Perhaps if the flow was contextual i.e. If I was in joint account select “from joint account” etc.

You’re sending money somewhere. Checking all of it is important.

There’s only 4 things on that screen.

Sigh. I can’t be bothered. I was pointing out for me it is not great and I have made the same mistake a number of times over maybe the last year. IMO if it keeps happening then do something about it. With the current flow I’ll need to consult a note whenever I transfer.

They have. The screenshot I shared above is a relatively recent change. It didn’t used to show you and you had to hope you were on the right account once you were past the first screen. Now it clearly shows you which account you’re paying from.

I don’t mean this rudely, but there is only so much Monzo can do. You need to pay more attention.

I can’t see anything changing here. The issue you’re seeing is a symptom of Monzo effectively merging the personal and joint accounts and having no real definition of when you’re acting as one account or the other.

I don’t think this is a bad thing, it means wherever you are in the app you can always make the payment you want to from the account you want to. It just means that you have to pay attention when you’re making a transfer which is probably quite an important thing to do when you’re sending money

And you can switch it there and then if it’s not correct.

Nothing wrong with that  If you would like to suggest an improvement perhaps we can move it to the ‘feedback and ideas’ section?

However, as it stands I don’t believe it’s a bug. As others have stated, it’s intentionally done this way.

I think the “suggestion” is that if you’re viewing a particular account (personal or joint) and are thus “in” that account, that should be the default source account for the payment if you select “pay someone”.

It would be intuitive, and making it happen doesn’t seem like rocket science.

Another pet peeve
The options presented when I’m in my personal / individual profile should not include an option to pay from my business account.

It used to change in the old design, it seems more of a singular view now

Thanks, I seemed to think it did.
