UK Local Elections 2021

That’s not a 16 hour shift though

12 hour is fairly common

I did vote counting for the 2010 General back when I worked in local gov.

It was around £250 for about 8 hours works. I found it fun and if you’re the type who likes to be up anyway on election night it’s nice to also get paid.

I distinctly remember the hourly pay being way better for counting than that the 16 polling station gig.

We don’t start counting here until the next day

Can take 3 days with local elections because of PR

You can work as many hours in a day as you want, generally, if you’ve opted out of the maximum limits or you work in certain areas.

There are accepted practices and generally this will amount to averaging over a set period.

Eg. In emergency services you might work 12 or 13 hours a day but with rest days it averages out to 48 hours a week over the year.

I’ll be splitting my vote in London.

Mayor: Labour
London Assembly Constituency: Labour
London Assembly Additional Members: Green

Labour are the only choice if you want to defeat the Tories in my constituency (first past the post election).

Greens for the additional members vote, as you’re electing from a party list. They usually pick up a couple of seats and I think it’s good to have representation from parties other than the big 3.

I only ever vote in the general erection. No point though as I’m a socialist and Labour are unlikely to win

If everyone thought like this, no party would ever win

It’s also important to vote in local elections as councils look after lots of things you probably care about. Roads, for instance. Or your local tip

I don’t think I’ll be going out of my way to vote for the police and crime commissioner (only election round here)

We’ve already got enough people commissioning crime round here tbf. Another elected one wouldn’t help much.

I always think this!

Why is it not just “Police Commissioner”?

The use of crime has very odd connotations, especially paired with commissioner?

Probably because then they’d be referred to as PC rather than PCC and rather than bring the top bod, they’d be out on the beat doing some proper work!

It is as usual an LD/Con race around here. Nobody else gets a look in. There’s something about the local mayor too but as ‘local’ is the city many miles away and he likely doesn’t know our town exists, I’m not bothering with that.

Not sure why that was flagged…

My area seems to flit between Liberal and Labour so really for me it’s not an issue (no parties that I fundamentally dislike are likely to get in) so I just generally wait until the campaigning is over to decide who to cast my vote for.

Was hoping for a independent, I dislike all the ones I have the option of.

The Labour and green candidates don’t even live here.

Surprised there are no independents at all. Sadly it’s either hard to be an independent MP or doesn’t come with much power or sway.
