Transferred money to Monzo via International Account

Hi, I stupidly didn’t notice that Monzo doesn’t support IBAN/BIC even when it is created using an IBAN generator. I went ahead and transferred money from my Irish bank account to my Monzo account. The money left my Irish account already and I’m just wondering if anyone knows what happens now? Will my money be returned? :frowning:

I think your best bet is to contact Monzo via the in-app chat.

I strongly advise anyone to avoid using these online tools.

Just having an IBAN is irrelevant, what matters is having the connectivity/infrastructure/systems in place to support any incoming transfers.

Sending money to a self-generated IBAN when the bank is not connected to SEPA or SWIFT is like writing a letter and guessing the house number of a new build and posting it off before the house number is up and before any letterbox installed.

It will be interesting to see what happens to this one, given that Monzo mentioned international transfers on this month’s update.

Based on the leaks of the feature that we saw a while ago, I expect those will be transfers abroad, rather than receiving international transfers.

Have you contacted Monzo support as suggested? They will be the only ones who can help

This might be useful for someone else coming across this thread - no need to take offence.

Don’t worry, this has happened before and I’m positive they’ll be able to sort it all out :slightly_smiling_face:

We live to learn :slightly_smiling_face: It will work out and by sharing here you’re helping others avoid doing this

The comment was not to you, it was to people who were thinking of using it.

I understand you’re upset but please don’t be reactive.

The response was only to discourage people from making the same mistake.

Hope you get this sorted, I’m sure you will! Keep us posted

I can see why there was confusion as Richard didn’t acknowledge the fact that his advice couldn’t help Claragh in his post. We’re not here to moderate each other’s posts though (that’s what flags & DMs are for), let’s focus on the ideas being discussed instead.

I had a similar situation. The money will go back to your main account at some point

I just thought I’d give the community member that message as I didn’t see any moderation from the “Coral Crew”.

Probably because we’re not moderators?

Sorry I meant Monzo Team.

I won’t reply and just flag in future.

Sorry to hear about this :disappointed:

Due to the way corespondent banking works, we wouldn’t expect money sent from within the EU to arrive with us as we aren’t connected to SEPA. In this case, the money should be returned to your Irish account although please contact us and we can look into it further

Internationally, (excluding Europe) banks tend to have individual clearing arrangements with other banks in the UK and more of these transfers arrive as Faster Payments/CHAPS having gone through various intermediaries.

However, for the avoidance of doubt we are not connected to any international payments schemes so please don’t generate an IBAN and use it to send money to us from outside the UK

Is there any update from this?
