The Monzo app is changing: we've had a makeover!

Hi all, I’ve just removed a few posts above.

We know app redesigns can be divisive (especially after we’ve changed something you’ve grown to love). But it’s important that we keep the conversation civil and constructive.

There’s some really useful feedback coming through about the new navigation, but please keep the criticism levelled at us rather than each other.

Thanks

Totally agree!

An essential feature that has been removed to the significant detriment of usefulness and usability!

Please rectify it guys!

Getting used to the new design, I would say don’t bring back the graph (as a mandatory item at least). No value for me in seeing an arbitrary line and I’m able to recall if my balance 3 days ago was higher or lower than today.

Following the app redesign, I think that the create a pot screen could do with some
With the new pot images, I thought it’d be nice to have presets so that a customer can create a pot with little hassle. For those that want something more, they can of course use the ‘create your own’ option and customise to their heart’s content.

Mockups below.
Please note, the images aren’t the ones used in app, but give a rough idea of appearance.

This is the second major update where useful functionality has been removed. In this update, the daily historical balance has been removed.

In a previous update around a year ago, the ability to filter historical transactions by vendor was removed, never to return.

It’s disappointing to say the least. I’m not even convinced the new layout works very well. Looks like tinkering about for the sake of it. I’ll get used to it like everyone else, but navigation was much better and clearer before. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it applies here

The single account layout design was sub-par in the new multi-account Monzo reality so I think it’s a bit too much of stretch to say the old layout was fine as it was. Whether the new arrangement is deemed better or worse is down to individual choice but at least there’s now a consistent way to switch between accounts without have to resort to ‘long keypresses’ or unsigned positional taps or whatever it was they ended up doing.

You can see a list of your pots. Just click your profile picture, or swipe your card down.

You’re right, i’m dumb. Apologies.

I really dislike the new look and the lack of a ‘your £xxx within’ your budget feature, it provided a daily threshold for me to stay within. Where has the graph gone, the budgeting element has really been eroded, not improved, looks like it’s going corporate and rail roading everyone to get more things i.e. savings accounts and loans, shame.

Nobody is rail-roading anyone, that is a bizarre take on the situation. Loans and savings have been there for some time, this updated layout simply makes it clearer how to access them. You are under no obligation to take out either.

As for the summary, I don’t recall the feature you’re referencing, but there is a visual representation of your summary on the main screen, and the full summary is still available via clicking that, or the pie chart icon.

Savings accounts normally work in favour for the customer, no? And you can opt out of lending promotions in your settings - I haven’t seen anything about loans in my app since doing so last year.

Glad that pointless graph is gone.

The app is very white now though. A dark mode option or just a bit less white would be nice

Testflight release fixed the issue where leaving the app forgets the last opened account (personal/joint). Should be out on Monday.

‘Things you can do with monzo’ one left swipe away and a click from taking out a loan or a mortgage, coming from someone that has worked in financial advice for 5 years is not beneficial to a person that is desperate for money and can so easily access debt. No obligation to take out either, but the UI is now focused less on providing budgeting tools and support to users and focused on selling their services.

Summary - the amount remaining within your budget / you have spend xxx over your budget was very useful and actually provided a valuable reminder on whether a person was on track to stay on their budget or how much was left if they were within it and wanted to spend more. The budget categories are somewhat vague imo (haing used cash flow planning tools at a professional level on multiple platforms) and the cash flow modelling diagram which was aesthetically pleasing has been removed, which imo obviously reduces the value added benefit of the budgeting features on the app.

(a) You can switch off lending promotions, if this is an issue? I mean, I can go into my NatWest app and apply for a loan, although this is more clunky a process than the way Monzo have done it, but in any event I’d expect any banking app to have loans as an option unless I opt out.

(b) This was a design/layout change. Summary functionality hasn’t changed to my knowledge, so any cash flow modelling you’re referring to must still exist. The summary button used to be at the bottom and now it’s at the top, but it all goes to the same place as it used to.

How exactly is a 1.15% of any real term benefit to the customer, a cash savings rate needs to be over inflation rate to even break even else you are losing money by keeping it in cash. I would be happy with zero percent interest on savings and receive a tool that allows me to manage my money 2% better on a personal level… the benefit of visibility on where you spend and how to better budget far exceeds 1.15%. Also it is a third party provider and you can get better cash rates elsewhere is you really want to cash invest. Do love Monzos attempt to motivate people to save and love the pots / regular contribution to pots feature though.

We’re well off topic now. Let’s talk about loans and/or savings pots elsewhere and stick to the New Navigation in this topic. Thanks.

Actually in the modern world users change banks and other services to meet their needs. If you want a traditional banking experience which you cannot influence there is still the high street branch.
If what you get fails to tick your boxes the smart thing is to change.
Alternatively, a smart option is to have a UI which is configurable to an individual’s needs. Then everyone is happy?
