The Meghan interview

The HR part has irked me a little. As a member of the family the HR won’t have anything to do with her; they look after those employed.

If I have issues with my family and I go to my housing association HR department they wouldn’t be able to help me either.

Seems a really odd one, considering that is partly being used as a sign that she was turned away for help when asked. She asked completely the wrong people and to me that’s clear as day.

Her life is spared. They can no longer touch her like they did with Diana.

All of this sounds shit. There is no way one can say that there truly that nothing could have been done. Somehow in all other aspects of life family, friends, neighbors colleagues, clients, etc do tend to notice if someone is in crisis and do help. Clearly this was not done here.

She mentions not having car keys or have permission to go on private meetings. When at the same time Prince Andrew can do anything, and ditto Prince Phillip. Clearly all members of royal family are equal, but some are more equal than others.

“This raises several questions. Why did she not…”

And I noped the fuck out of the article at this point. When someone is having a mental health crisis, don’t judge the choices they’ve made to seek help. They’re in crisis, they’re not necessarily able to think straight or rationally. And that road leads to victim blaming.

You cannot say that it’s OK to ask for help when struggling, but then also shit on people who don’t ask for help in the ‘right way’. That’s a one-way trip down the All Shame All The Time Road.

Instead of blaming Meghan for asking the wrong person for help, why not blame the person she asked for help for not acting with a minimum of basic human decency. Don’t say “It’s not my job, I can’t help you not want to kill yourself.” At the very least, signpost them towards the people in the organisation who are equipped to help.

And if you’re a journalist writing an article about how an organisation have said all the right things about wanting to deal with mental health problems, maybe try and remember that when it comes down to it, words mean shit all and it’s actions that count. “Why would the palace not want to help”? Maybe because they didn’t actually mean anything they said.

(See also, organisations that claim to have diverse hiring policies and someone still can’t stop hiring white men for mostly everything. On the one hand, sure, you may say you welcome diversity; on the other hand, your actions speak otherwise.)

Have you not just done the same thing here? You don’t know what the pressure is on this person in HR was under. Their own mental stresses from their job. You have just criticised them without knowing their story or what happened prior or after this. Do you know the HR person didn’t point her in a direction of a charity? Speak to Harry? Another member of the Royal household? It’s easy to blame people when little information has been given on an incident.

In my opinion, whatever anyones views on Meghan and her story, I agree people shouldn’t question her mental health issues. In my opinion, if it got this far for Meghan, she was failed by a lot of people around her. Not just the Royal Family or this person in HR, but Harry as well and their doctor and friends etc., who didn’t guide, support or signpost her.

Feels like most people of here are 100% believing of everything Meghan says. Which is odd considering there’s already inaccuracies in her stories which have come out. But it seems she’s 100% convinced the younger generations that she’s totally correct. Yes I’ve been suicidal myself and I’m sympathetic to that but don’t assume she’s perfect here. How could she have not asked questions about what it’d be like to marry into the royal family to Harry? Seems so naive

It should have been Harry’s first priority, if they wanted help they could have got it, they were not kept prisoners at the Palace.
They also knew Archie would not get a title until Charles becomes king.
Them is the rules!

I haven’t really thought that deeply about whether I believed every single word that comes out of her mouth.

But to me, most of it adds up. Look at all the press, the harassment, the fact she didn’t go outside (wasn’t seen by anyone) for months, can’t see her friends, can’t do simple things.

Whether she was suicidal or having a breakdown or just “a bit sad” to me is moot. Someone has said they were struggling and couldn’t get the help. Not believing someone who is open about how they feel is incredibly damaging not only to them but to everyone.

How many times have you seen a suicide on the news with comments from friends/family along the lines of “We had no idea” or “If only they had just talked to us” or “I wish they could have asked for help”

Maybe it is naïve. But who do you ask? Kate? The white British woman who was born into extreme wealth and mixed in similar circles who never had even an ounce of criticism? There’s not a chance they thought it would end like this and how could you know? She was prepared and did give up her career to commit to public service, shut her blog, closed her social media etc. Some things you can’t predict.

This is why I’ve muted anything to do with this on Twitter.

This, like almost every subject now, has to be (excuse the terrible wording here) black or white.

You either are 100% for Meghan/Harry and hate the Royal Family and everything it stands for or you are far up the Royal Family’s backside and think Meghan is the anti-Christ.

When in reality I find myself in the middle. Most of me doesn’t even care (mental health issues aside which actually clearly need to be addressed within the Royal Household as a whole) but I don’t hate Meghan, believe she mentally struggled, but don’t hang on to her every word either and find the interview very distasteful.

I also don’t hate the Royal Family and prefer it to another politician in charge. However I believe there should be a referendum on this (probably once the Queen passes) at the same time.

We don’t all have to be all on one side or the other but the vicious words online push you into one camp.

Please read the images I posted from the times above.

I read them, none of that makes any difference to what I said.

I love that you classify being pissed off as swearing!

I’d have to beep out every third word around you. :joy:

Speaking only for myself, I never believe 100% what any celebrity trying trying to flog their latest project, or member of the royal family say.

I take it at face value until there is evidence one way or another.

As far as Markle and her suicidal thoughts are concerned, I believe she said she had some.

I don’t doubt they’ve both had a difficult time. However, I’m really not sure such a public interview was the right thing to do, and is not fair on the royal family, who are likely in most cases are good people. Whilst the racist remark was appalling, I think sadly, most families do still have the odd person (almost always of the older generation) who say the wrong thing. Luckily they are a rarer breed now. The problem with that interview, it implicates everyone in the royal family, and it’s difficult for them to defend themselves without getting into a public argument.

The Royal Family have had their side put out for years, just never officially. They kill stories they want to kill and let the ones slide that they don’t care about (or want published to tarnish someone)

How has Meghan had a harder time than Prince Andrew?!

The other question is “has Andrew had a hard time?”

So true!

He clarified his position the next day. That her mental health struggles are a serious issue.

You can believe that but also believe shes lying about every other point on the interview.

Doesn’t look like much of a clarification to me

But he did?

The titles issue is easily disproved.
The “not doing research” is easily disproved.
