Peston on ITN tonight confidently predicted Johnson would be gone “in hours.”
I thought it was a bold prediction at the time.

Technically we don’t have one now. That many people have resigned, they’re having to postpone debates, hearings, committee’s etc, as they don’t have the MPs available to sit in them.
All these resignations; are they resigning completely so they are no longer MPs or just from their top jobs and they are still the MP for WhereeverTown?
No, they’re resigning from the government, and becoming backbenchers.
Weasel Zahawi, apparently part of the delegation urging the PM to go, WON’T resign despite having his bluff called. They’re all scum.
Johnson clearly the type of man who insists on staying on a ‘winner stays on’ pool table at the pub because “You got lucky” “I would’ve won that if I hadn’t accidentally potted the black” “That was just a warm-up game” “Go again! I’ll beat you this time!” …
Just been announced, Michael Gove has been sacked.
Johnson’s latest genius idea, after losing so many people to resignations and therefore struggling to fill the positions and form a working government?
He’s fired Gove! Now that’s another position he has to fill again. Amazing!
There just aren’t enough people in the parliamentary party to be able to fill those cabinet vacancies. The UK no longer has a functioning government. Constitutionally we’re on very shaky ground now.
Much damage being done to the constitution as a system now. When someone starts breaking it like this, it’s very hard to fix them again. You need to trust the system will work - but it’s not working now. You need to trust that the next leader will work properly - but they might be Johnson but worse, and be determined to break it even more to entrench their grip on power.
Bear in mind that many conservatives abandoning Johnson today and declaring him awful have know this all along. What’s changed isn’t how awful Johnson is, but how useful he is.
Plot twist is that Boris is actually an undercover Labour member
Russian agent, rather.
And I’m barely even joking, giving he has admitted to unsupervised visits to Lebedev.
Fun fact: MP’s cannot resign.
There are two random unpaid positions that technically a resigning MP is appointed to that makes them ineligible to be an MP.
Technically speaking only 2 MP’s can “resign” at once, though in practice if more “resign” then it’s spread throughout the day.
The office of the Crown Stewards and Bailiffs of the Chiltern Hundreds must be an extremely full room by now.
Today has shown that the only thing he cares about is power.
We have a lot of people calling for him to resign. We have a lot of no confidence letters from his own MPs. We have 40+ resignations. We have him sacking Gove for being disloyal.
Despite all of that, Boris still thinks he is the only one capable of preventing chaos. He’s gone mad with power.
They are still the MP for their constituency.
That’s the polite censored version ![]()

Agreed - but I suspect that they won’t want it any other way, there are a lot of sharks in the water circling, so a step down and “interim PM” could leave them (Conservatives) in a verrryy unstable position come an early election.
“I’ll resign but stay as PM until October”
Nah, bruv. Off you trundle now.
