The Great Permacrises

The DUP will not be happy.

But then the DUP are never happy…

Any excuse not to go to work frankly

If you want house prices to fall, you need to accept high(er) interest rates.

That interest rates have been so low for so long, is the main reason prices are so high

Overall, lower house prices are probably good for the economy overall.

And Tech valuations.

Plenty of people have made hay whilst money was “free”.

If house prices drop that heavily it will serious affect the ability to build new homes. I know a few developers and their costs have sky rocketed since covid making it very hard to get a decent margin out. I also know some developers have simply stopped builds at the earlier stages (before presale) to see if things improve.

I mean they have made plenty of money in the past but its just something to consider, if they slow down it hits prices. We have also needed new council housing for decades since Maggy let councils sell it off without forcing them to reinvest.

I have very little sympathy for house builders as a sector.

In my view, they have contributed to artificially keeping prices high by building the wrong types of property and banking land rather than building on it.

While they may make less money per property, I believe the economy overall will be better off with lower house prices.

Not a chance house prices are going down by 20%, no matter how much people want it to.

I mean they will all start banking land if there is no margin but I do agree they have been left unchallenged for far far too long and now its at the point where the vast majority of house building is done by them, if they seize up house prices wont fall.

The same problem is occurring with buy to let landlords, everyone hates them because they remove houses to buy but now that lots are selling and pulling out of the market rents are spiralling.

Both needed council competition to help moderate them, neither can overcharge easily when there are affordable other options but when you dont have that it leads to terrible prices for all.

I dont expect a tory gov to sit back and let house prices drop 20%, they all have too much money in them so expect house builder funding if it starts to tip too hard.

Not really a fan of this. The vote impacts all of us so why shouldn’t the media be allowed?

And Kate Forbes has come out against this decision.

This entire contest has been a disaster for the SNP so far, and we are only a few weeks into it.

I don’t understand the article. How does falling house prices prevent a mortgage crises? If my house value falls 100% I still owe the same amount of money.

Maybe it’s more about new buyers? Lower prices means more people can afford, more mortgages at lower prices? :man_shrugging:

Completely disagree. I’m not allowed a vote in what happens in the house of commons, yet we have feeds of the debates so we can hold those with power to account.

What’s happened to accountability? It just means these potential leaders can promise whatever they like to each group with essentially no one holding them to account for what they promise.

It might be a closed vote, but the outcome matters to everyone in Scotland. Why shouldn’t the people of Scotland see what their potential leaders are saying?

What about the members who can vote but can’t attend the hustings because they are full already? Don’t they deserve to know what their candidates are promising to be able to make an informed choice?

It just makes it seem as if they don’t care about transparency and that they have something to hide.

Imagine if the Tories did this over the summer. The SNP would be calling them every negative thing under the sun for it.

If the Tories hid behind closed doors, there is a lot that we wouldn’t know about, and Liz and Rishi certainly came out with some stuff the general public really should be hearing about.

You cant link to disco without forcing people to login/launch disco.

Doesn’t impact me in the slightest, makes no difference who the leader is going to be. The last leader made no impact with me, so this new one certainly won’t

If you are in Scotland, it will impact your life, even if you don’t notice it.

But even if it didn’t, so what? Does the fact it doesn’t impact you personally mean it should be behind closed doors? Do we have to ask DaveJ to see if it impacts you before we do anything?

Just correcting your bold claim that it affects everyone … Spoiler, it doesn’t. Don’t talk for other people with grand claims of this and that

What you mean is it affects you and some people in Scotland.

That’s still not everyone.

What you mean

Im fully aware of what I meant. I don’t need petty “corrections” from you.

The biggest problem for the candidates is that they are three almost nobodies and this would have at least given them a running start on people knowing who they are.

Own goal from the SNP as far as I can see.

Apart from increasing awareness of the public profile of the candidates, it addresses the issue that even SNP members who could not attend a hustings will now be able to see what occurs.
