The Great Permacrises 😱

My Macs both seem to autocorrect except when typing URLs in Safari. I don’t remember specifically enabling it.

Did you call them to switch ? some of the company sites I’ve visited don’t allow online switching

Ok thanks

Just on crisis stuff.

Does anyone have a loan calculator so I can add loan amount, remaining months, Apr, and then work out how much I’d save if I made lump sum payments over the term?

Wouldn’t even know how to create over excel

Had a brief look online and couldnt really find what I wanted other than a mortgage calculator which made zero sense, or wouldn’t amend to the terms I wanted having only 2.5 ish years left

Edit: https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/finance/calculators/loan-payoff-calculator.php

I found one that works.

This one still works, in case it displays differently:

I feel sorry for all the teachers and support staff who’ll have to see the cost of living crisis play out in front of them day in day out. They already see a lot, and now they’ll be the added pressures of hungry children.

P.S welcome to the new 3rd world UK

At this point, do you really feel like people aren’t that dumb?

While it’s true to say the root cause of the crisis isn’t the war in Ukraine and Russia’s posturing (see: UK energy market crisis: what caused it and how does it affect my bills? | Energy industry | The Guardian from last year), it is fair to say that Russia actions have had a significant effect on the current state of the crisis.

Russia is the second-largest gas producer in the world. Even though we don’t buy that much from Russia directly, Russia cutting its supplies to many other countries (like Germany) has an overall effect on the international gas market - those who have been cut off need to find their gas from elsewhere, and that drives up prices for everyone.

Still, I will concede that one out of three is not a great hit rate from a politician’s claims.

This, and it’s also his desire to invoke some sort of wartime spirit so he can play at Churchill, which seems to be his fantasy.

Stopping children starving is playing into putin’s hands? :astonished:

Seems the right approach. Something I’ve thought needed doing for a while - decouple the energy markets.

It’ll hurt the generator’s profits though, so no chance of it being adopted over here.

There is a good reason why the price of gas affects the electricity price - that’s because so many countries use gas to generate electricity.

Those who produce electricity using cheaper methods like renewable energy, benefit from the higher price - it’s a signal (and funding) for them to invest in more capacity.

It will also encourage innovation and a shift to more energy efficiency. The same thing happened in/after 1970s.

All it’s doing is driving the price up, and meaning a lot of people are going to be cold this winter. Profits be damned.

Just plain greed. Most corporates are the same.

Its not greed. Its how a market works.

I really wish they would teach some basic economics in schools.

It’s not a functioning market.

Markets work through competition driving prices down. There is no way that can happen in the energy ā€˜market’ it actively tries to use the highest price.

It needs massive reform, and fast. Luckily the EU looks to be trying, although it may already be too late. Even our own government is investigating reform so but that isn’t due to report until 2025… So useless.

If this goes on for much longer we’ll be in for a recession the likes of which none of us have ever known. But fick the economics. This is about people going cold and starving. I don’t give a toss whether some CEO has to forego his 100m bonus this year.

I think nationalising the generators isn’t actually required if you legislate to control and ultimately reform the markets but it might be the only thing we can do quickly enough hence it being actively considered.

That, alongside no functioning government, is the big issue here for sure

If it wasnt sky high recorded profits and high cost, I’d agree, but as profit is increasing month on month or however it’s going, there should be little.to no profit.

Aka, greed, and happy to let others suffer as a consequence.
