I didn’t get a text? Is this something you have to sign up for ? How many of the 500k customers got this text out of interest? Anyone know?

I guess we’ll need to take your word for it for now - we’ll see how well that culture stands up once Monzo begins to drive towards turning a profit.
I don’t think it’s even possible for a company to care. Humans care. Animals might care. But a company is incapable of caring, or having any other emotion. Let’s not fool ourselves.
Individuals working for a company can care, though (and I’ve experienced very caring people at terrible companies), and some companies might actively foster an environment where their employees care. And I think this is where Monzo really stands out, as well as that they enable their customer support personnel to go beyond the pure duty, and seem to have a culture that encourages this.
However, I think you raise a valid point in your later post here: these things often don’t scale well, so I share your scepticism about the future in this regard.
I think Monzo has an amazing opportunity to change this perception. First Direct, from the awards it has garnered, seems to have been able to do it, even while being part of one of the “Big Four” - so I’m sure Monzo can achieve this as well.
I don’t think the status page is common knowledge I’ve been here for ages and didn’t know about it
I received the text alerts from Monzo.
Exactly. Nothing to no one in the real world. Hence all the moaning tweets…
What’s difficult about push notifications again (on both apps/banks)…
Agreed, I think push notifications which you can turn on in the app (maybe on by default) would be better. Then have the SMS as the backup as it’s helpful when you’re travelling abroad with no data.
We’ve been driving towards turning a profit for a while already. It’s been our biggest focus as a company for at least 6 months now. I don’t want to quote exact figures as I haven’t seen the latest ones, but we have radically reduced our per-user costs in this time-frame already.
I also have had a sneak peek of our full list of ideas and plans to turn those per-user costs into per-user profits and I don’t see them impacting our impeccably high levels of support, delight, service and empathy.
Essentially - if your hypothesis is that an empathetic culture has to take a hit in order to be profitable, then I disagree ![]()
You can subscribe to the #status page on the Slack and select all notifications. I prefer it to receiving texts.
I’ve seen the status channel - it looks very much abandoned.

Edit: Screenshot of how it looks like.
I think Monzo automatically opts-in customers’ phone numbers into alerts on the status page. I remember getting a text about an outage despite never signing up for notifications on the status page.
I meant the Monzo ones. Does Starling actually report outages? I didn’t think they did except for a line in-app.

They do, but they quite often delete notifications from their status page, or don’t report certain things that Monzo would.
…and I think I read something, somewhere, sometime where Starling tried to rationalise why they deleted reports of outages.
On balance, as a customer, I’ve got a feel for each of these companies and overall, I prefer the honesty and integrity of Monzo rather than the smoke and mirrors of Starling.
Interesting that many of us have the same perception - when I see starling staff, especially the CEO, post it feels more like they say what they think will sound the best, but in a way that makes me distrust them. When monzo staff post, it feels like I’m interacting with a real potentially fallible person but one who cares.
From a pure functionality POV I think starling are ahead, yet it’s monzo that I use day to day.
I’ve just updated my Starling app and it seems they now let you have a business account
