I have applied for a Starling account, just waiting for it to go through
Nice one Jonathan, let me know what you think. I am trialling Starling at the moment as well as Monzo. In a lot of ways, they are extremely similar, you can tell they had the same beginnings with the same people. I like it though, the community is very friendly and customers services are excellent. When Monzo finally offer me a current account, Iāll weight it all up and make a choice.
I only went for a Starling CA as I learnt about it on here and Iām still waiting for a Monzo CA. My gut feel is Monzo is truly innovative.
Someone on this forum likened it to Monzo being a startup playing at banks and Starling a bank playing at being a startup. I understand what theyāre trying to convey.
That said, Starling is good.
You could have opened an account with any number of Monzo competitors five/ten/twenty years ago. I donāt really see the relevance?
Anyway, I guess weāre happy that youāre happy. I looked at them a few days ago but I donāt really need two accounts so I certainly donāt need three!
Did Monzo competitors exist five/ten/twenty years ago? I thought Monzo was the leader and everyone was just following behind.
Haha. I was going to bite but you beat me to it!
Iāve had no problem transferring from Monzo pre-pay to Starling.
I transferred my CA from Nationwide to Starling. I have yet to really explore Monzo. When l first started with Starling l was blown away thinking it was amazing, real time notifications, ledger balance banished, transactions immediately onto my list.
But now l am a bit bored.
l do wonder to myself if fintech will hit a ceiling on innovation that actually all the offers become the same old, same old. Because how much differentiation can there be? l guess that will be through how open and what kind of connected world Starling or Monzo et al can create with (wondered a little off topic!).
Overall happy with Starling, have they āgotā me - verdict is out. The spending analytics definitely need some work, the pulse is quite dull.
Iāve actually uses Monzo for about a week, and have used Starling for 4 days now. I actually prefer Monzo for items like TfL as itās a lot more descriptive on what is going on. For the first transaction Starling kept it at 10p, and when the actual dayās transaction came through changed that transaction to the actual amount. It was a lot clearer on Monzo with it being -10p then +10p, with the dayās travel appearing in the next working dayās transactions.
I joined on the 27th. Have you tried it since the 23rd?
Iāve got a debit card if that makes any difference to you?
In the end I was getting pretty bored with the constantly transferring money to the prepaid card, I really donāt see the point in them for my use. As a test vehicle for a bank theyāre fine but now weāve hit CA rollout and can begin to do proper banking all of the notifications and stuff start to have proper purpose.
You write as if youāve confused the prepay cards for the actual product of Monzo rather than as a test vehicle but I donāt believe thatās really the case in which case I donāt really understand the slightly mocking tones. Iām possibly misreading it to be fair.
Oh pleaseā¦
Ok, I wasnāt misreading the mocking tones sigh
I have no words here.
Iāll try it again when I get paid
lol! Yeah Pulse is very unoriginal (and lacking much offense which is why it probably got picked).
This exchange is a good example of the reason why users are encouraged to avoid responding to a postās tone instead of its actual content.
Youāre welcome to be as critical about Monzo as you fancy in this community & at the same time, other userās are welcome to disagree.

At the moment I have only used the virtual card, which is actually pretty cool as you can pay without having a physical card, what I am not liking in my opinion is the doughnut chart, I quite like the graph plus a daily breakdown like Monzo
Credit where it is due for Starling is that their CS are really nice and helped me to resolve a problem at about 2am (donāt ask
)! They were also rather funny but Monzo are better (Starling do need to learn about the way of the emoji otherwise itās a deal breaker [jokes]
)!
I donāt have a Starling community account as, tbh, most answers I can sort of find in this forum or in the Starling forum, and like you said @Lucky_Luxy, both Monzo and Starling are extremely similar. What I find good is that Starling told me privately on Twitter that they will not charge for using foreign ATM fees for the foreseeable future and they said in the app that āYour Starling account was made for travelā - this means when Monzo starts to charge for ATM, you can pay using Monzo but take out money using Starling - the best of both worlds, albeit Monzo is king and Starling is a decent back up!
What they (or Monzo or anyone) canāt control is the exchange rate
, do wish it was like the times when Ā£1 = ā¬1.32 or Ā£1 = more then US$2ā¦really want to grab a bargain abroad
