Starling Feedback

If a man said “being a man I like that there is a man in charge of Monzo” we would rightly be outraged

Yep, this has been mentioned in the Starling Feedback thread.
It’s nice to see challenger banks stepping up to finally provide digital alternatives to traditional joint accounts.

I was just about to make a joke saying wow an article about Starling that doesn’t involve Anne Boden…

Anyone notice Monzo’s Android app rating went up from 4.2 to 4.3?

Yeah, it’s been at that level for some time (a few weeks?) though.

Wow I wasn’t aware they were this close to launching. That’s impressive! I hope it’s a smooth launch… Personally I prefer Monzo’s approach to go with a small group first so they can refine the feature but it seems to generally work well for starling so good on them.

They seem to rush when monzo announces any trials, GamBlock, join accounts, etc etc. Think they like to say they was first for their paid for marketing :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Danny, can I just say that your contributions on both here and the Starling forum have been invaluable - As someone who hasn’t been impacted by the gambling side of things, I struggled to see the major benefit - So thank you for that.

But to say that Starling simply rush out features to beat Monzo (when you’ve only been following them for a very limited time), is simply fueling the “Monzo vs Starling” fire, you have previously said you didn’t want to do.

Clearly a feature like this is months in development - I’m sure we all hope it can live up to the expectations.

Monzo is great, the following is great, but it seems newer customers on this forum are going overboard on the “Monzo is the best thing ever”, and that isn’t ever going to benefit the development of Monzo.

I doubt very much there is really competition in the way some end users seem to think

The real competition is the legacy rust. There’s no point for challengers trying to poach customers from each other when there are orders of magnitude more customers still stuck with legacy rust who don’t even have an idea that better options exist.

Andre is absolutely right.

Our biggest competitors are the major banks.

We applaud every company that’s trying to do something new, even if their approaches to product development, community and transparency may be different to ours.

It was meant in more gest than it came across, mainly because starling won’t let me open an account but still won’t tell me why exactly as you know :). Sorry if that came across wrong !!

Both Starling and Monzo can exist together. I think if either Starling or Monzo viewed each other as the main competition then there is only so many customers each have. Growth comes from people switching from more traditional banks. They are both modern banks with a fresh way of dealing with finances. Choosing either one will provide someone with a modern experience.

The main competition is the more traditional banks. These have been around for many years, with lots of customers with lots of products to suit many people in different circumstances with many legacy systems and paperwork. That sounds like a more interesting problem to solve rather than a rival fintech who has similar tech. Both Starling and Monzo still have a while to go on the journey of reaching more people with a new way of banking.

No wonder some people on each community get so defensive when there’s articles like that out there :man_facepalming:t3: Not a fan of the media always putting FinTech companies against each other.

Agreed. I really don’t buy the argument of Starling “copying” Monzo either - the :monzo: joint accounts were announced just a few weeks ago - you don’t build production-ready (otherwise Starling wouldn’t announce them just yet) joint accounts in that short amount of time so even if they wanted to copy Monzo I doubt it would’ve been possible.

I think Starling has been working on their joint account quietly over the past few months and this similarity in launch dates is just an unfortunate coincidence. Why can’t people accept that joint accounts were just a highly requested feature and both Starling and Monzo are doing the right thing by working on it? Why does it always have to be “copying”?

Exactly. It’s hardly ground breaking stuff either, neither has created this amazing brand new feature! A credible bank should offer joint accounts in my opinion.

It’s a natural evolution of a product that once you have a solo account that a joint account would follow. Their competition provides them (traditional banks) and their customers wanted them.

For a lot of people a joint account is a deal breaker to switch. Both Monzo and Starling responded to customer demand.

By becoming a bank if you never even considered the idea of a joint account (not necessarily making one) that would be even more of a story.
