Smart thermostats - any recommendations?

I have seen this sadly for me I got it installed a few years ago when the thermostat broke but looking at moving in a few years so would probably pay it but considering I was planning to get tado again in my new place they have just lost a sale

I think wait and see how it plays out.

People have been very vocal about this via the community and on Reddit, plus there’s been some negative press, so I’m not sure if they’ll actually go ahead with it.

I don’t mind paying a subscription for the core service, but it needs to be value added rather than value taken away.

I’m not sure whether or not the web interface is impacted anyway. If I can still schedule over there and tweak via HA then that’s fine.

If I have to move all my scheduling to HA that’s also ultimately fine.

There’s two issues at play here

  1. The utterly bizarre way of testing whether people would be willing to pay or not and then pulling a gotcha no it was all a joke! Thanks!
  2. Tado moaning about server costs as if that’s the consumer’s problem.

To me all of this would go away with three changes

  1. Expose an API on the internet bridge so that Home Assistant and apps can be built around it.
  2. Introduce subscription charges for new customers only
  3. Gradually phase in subscription charges for existing customers if they want to continue using the cloud services, say 12 months.

The local API is the key here, actually it’s critical. I know you can add your stuff via HomeKit to get the local controls but there’s a bunch of differences with it that make it not entirely the same.

There’s data going to/from that internet bridge. We need access to it.

I’m done with Google hardware, not that I’ve bought anything in a few years.

Yup, email received today informs support for my OG learning Nest Thermo stops in October.

They do give a link to purchase a discounted ā€˜equivalent’ before them. A Tado. WTF? No thanks.

But realistically, they are moving on with Nest. I’ve replaced the Protects once and now they’re discontinued so I can’t replace them again. Thermo’s? - another lifetime (which looks like 10-12 years)
The bigger question is what will replace them. And I think the answer is… probably nothing. Google Home / Apple HomeKit both seem to be erm, stuck. So why bother with hardware?

The smart home hasn’t been cracked by anything yet, other than Home Assistant and a niche team of devs producing innovative solutions at a price - the price being the difficulty for the average home owner to even access this stuff. Never mind configure and use it.

Ultimately, the ā€˜smart home’ dream has been killed by the multiple attempts by multiple tech giants to pull renters/home owners into their eco-systems.

But I still have my Hue system. Thankfully. And for that, Philips/Signify, I am grateful.

I’m not so bothered about the dropping of support, it’s more the fact that they’re pulling out of Europe altogether.

Makes sense now why the newest Thermostat still hasn’t been launched here.

I’m probably moving towards Alexa. The HomeKit ecosystem just isn’t wide enough for my liking.

Shame that Amazon also don’t sell their (well reviewed) thermostat in the UK.

I only caught up with that retreat news this morning. Weird. Looks like another sunsetting exercise.

Upon re-reading the email from Google about dropping support yesterday, the Tado, offered at £80, does exactly the same as my OG Nest thermo does and is Matter enabled. So I may jump to the Tado after all.

I’ve just bought a couple of Protects from Curry’s who still had some in stock. My current ones expire in July. Hopefully the new ones will still work with the Nest app for their lifetime.

Where are you seeing it for £80?

From the Google email:

ā€œTo help with this transition and to show our appreciation for your long-term loyalty, we would like to offer a Google Home app-compatible thermostat from tado° for a special price. Please click this link [link removed] to redeem your offer for a tado° Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit at 50% off the retail price of Ā£159.99.ā€

That sound overly hopeful, but good luck!

According to Ars Technica and other tech websites, Google are just ceasing production, not bricking existing devices, so they should be OK. Their replacement, when it arrives, will also work with the Nest app.

Basically the standard discount that appears during sale times sadly.

The new tado is good with much more local functionality and matter support which will reduce their running costs for tado. The v3 etc (I have) are very server dependent and it’s not ideal. I would upgrade to the new one if the buy in wasn’t so bad to redo it but maybe when we get a heat pump as they are working on auto balancing for that.

Same problem here, whether I go for a tado is debatable, might go safe and go with Hive

I’ve had Hive thermostat and plugs since 2016 and, apart from software bugs in the very early days, it’s all just worked. Works great with Apple HomeKit, too.

Hive has been killing parts of it I heard and I don’t know how long British Gas will go on with it tbh.

I am curious how well tado matter edition will work if they went bust bust there would be a smidge of hope it would keep working.

Why do you view Hive as a safer option?

Had an early Tado, had a rough experience and switched to Nest, and Hive just feels like the safe vanilla option

Just got home to find our flat feeling like the inside of an Icelandic volcano.

I could see in Home Assistant and Tado the heating was turned on, but when I asked my wife about it she said she didn’t even realise it was hot?!?

Anyway, turns out that I’d only set the child lock on the visible living room radiator’s TRV and not the one that’s behind the sofa. Our little one went behind there a few hours ago and played with it apparently which triggered the heating to come on at 25°c.

Lesson learnt and I’ll be making sure that all of our TRVs have the child lock switched on (we never actually use them to adjust the temperature anyway). Now to wait for Octopus to get the data to see what the damage is…

After holding out, then holding out some more (aka lazy, but with Winter approaching) , I got the final email from Google reminding me our Nest Thermo Gen2 will no longer be able to be controlled other than locally/manually.

End of an era.

So I bit the bullet and went for the tado X ā€˜upgrade’ offer from Google. For some reason, the 50% discount turned into a larger discount and I got the tado X controller and smart thermo for Ā£65 (from Ā£160 :eyes:) - Sofa Sugud

DIY decommissioning the Nest and install of the tado controller was simple, noting that switching off 5GHz WiFi is a necessity during the install/set-up (Matter only works with 2.4GHz WiFi). And we also got scheduled Hot Water control back (missing from the Nest Gen2). tado app control is simple and easy. Tested it for a week and all perfect - subscribed to the tado auto-assist option purely for auto-geofencing support for all family members with the tado app.

So we’re now in a slightly better place than with the 11-year old Nest Thermo. tado features working via Google Home too (with Assistant and Gemini commands working OK). Home Assistant sees the Border router (tado X controller ā€˜hub’) OK, but fails to recognise the tado X thermostat (via Matter) directly for some reason yet unknown. I’ll hopefully get to the bottom of this, but thermo control via HA is an unnecessary requirement. I can script custom automations in Google Home as required (trying to lose HA completely if poss)

Next up - purchasing tado X radiator thermo’s for each room for micro-management of each room’s radiator energy control & use - hopefully integrated before the cold nights arrive.

Winter 2025/26  - almost ready for it…
