I’ve noticed today that any new outgoing bank transfers have a default reference of “Sent From Monzo” unless I replace it with something else. I know this is probably another marketing experiment, but to me it feels a bit spammy. I’d be interested to know what other people think - I might just be being picky.
Edit: I was unaware of the fact that the reference is currently set to the account holder name if not filled in (though this isn’t visible on the monzo app). On balance I prefer the new implementation, though I agree that it should not be auto filled before making a transfer, rather just used when no reference is filled in.
I think it’s fine, it will help the recipient identify the transaction. All banks set some kind of default, but most of them don’t let you easily change it on the fly!
NatWest default to the last used reference, which is handy for paying off credit cards but potentially not much else. I know if everyone’s requests for toggles were listened to then the app but would be a mess, but a toggle to use the reference from the last transaction for each payee would be useful.
The only entity that “Sent from Monzo” benefits is Monzo themselves. It doesn’t identify who the payment is from. If I received a payment that said “Sent from Barclays” or “Sent from Nat West” it would just baffle me!
With Monzo, when you tap into the reference field, it pops up a list of previously used references for that payee, with the last used one at the top. I find it works very well for paying my credit card.
Is part of the issue that previously it was ‘blank’ but actually sent through your name as a reference? If so, I’d prefer the pre-populate it with whatever will be sent so that you know it will send something. But my ideal behaviour would be:
