Sent a mortgage overpayment to Halifax without adding a reference number. What happens now!

I sent a standing order mortgage overpayment to Halifax without adding a reference number. I’m concerned the money wont know where to go to, or will be lost. I have contacted Halifax and explained this but wondered if a similar thing has happened to anybody else in the past and how was it solved?

It should bounce back to your account within 24 hours if it was to their general account details without a ref.

What did Halifax say?

I’ve done this before.

It should be returned automatically, usually overnight.

If you have any trouble, contact Halifax to locate the payment and they’ll return it

I’ve done this with a payment to HMRC and with premium bonds. It will be fine, the money will go to an account with them, they’ll be able to track it just fine based on the sending details, and they’ll either return it to you or just allocate the payment internally when they match it up to where it’s supposed to go. It won’t be lost to the aether or anything.
