Searching “Nancy” in transactions fails in an interesting way

Issue: When searching bank transactions with the string “Nancy” I see “n/a cy”

Details to reproduce: Open Monzo on iOS. Tap the magnifying glass to search. Type “Nancy”. Tap “search” in the keyboard. Look at the search field.
OS: iOS 18.7.1 (22H31)
Device: iPhone 16 Pro

Seems to be just an iOS thing, Android is fine.

Do you have a shortcut to correct “na” to n/a” in the Settings app > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement?

Good question, Jim, but I just checked and no I don’t.

I think it’s Monzo’a app replacing it and I wonder if it’s something to do with NaN often meaning “not a number” in terms of type checking a variable… but then that’s not the same thing as “n/a” :man_shrugging:

Works fine for me (iOS 26.1).

Odd - it doesn’t do it for me, I’ve tried a few variations too like Nando’s etc. I’m on iOS 26.1 and the current version of the Monzo app.

I can’t reproduce on 26.1 either.

Do you use a custom keyboard or a non-EN keyboard language?

Hey @Simon :waving_hand:

I’ve asked our iOS engineers to see if they can replicate this. Answer soon :soon_arrow:

Thanks.

I can only replicate this in Monzo search, doesn’t happen in Apple Notes or browser address bar.

Here’s my text replacements:

Also can’t replicate it in the notes field on a Monzo transaction.

Additional context: when I first saw this I was on a train with (probably) very poor connectivity and the search was failing. I can still replicate this now, though, on my home WiFi.

Nancy searches fine for me but when I search a mate’s surname Bowles the search changes it to Bowl (in a label box) and s.

Interestingly I do have a single purchase from a vendor called Bowl. However will have more transfers with my mate for dinner/lunch/events settlements.

It’s very annoying, as even putting “Bowles” doesn’t stop the app changing it.
