I’ve got both “Activate” and “Explore” on mine ![]()
I know certain payments are excluded from consideration under the “Double Payday” T&C but has it been made clear that winning a prize can also adversely impact means tested benefits?
For instance, the level of universal credit or pension credit (among others) someone is entitled too are dependent on their income or savings levels - and qualifying for one of these benefits also acts as a gateway to others.
I don’t have any wording on mine but I also can’t get rid of it - I tried opting out but the text is still there, unlike Cashback which disappears when you opt out.
The campaign is designed to attract people to get their salaries paid into Monzo, preferably higher earners. Monzo needs to build a bigger cash reserve to be able to afford to sell more credit products and gain profit. It’s not some Corporate Social Responsibility campaign to even out pay gaps with a lucky draw.

Would you say it’s a fair game if the reward was paying the lowest earning player with the highest earner’s salary and vice versa?
I simply enjoy the fact that there’s even such a lucky draw in the first place.
PS: I am not a Higher rate earner.
This is only applicable if it takes them over the minimum capital threshold, let’s say £6k for universal credit.
It would be treated as capital, in way of a lottery win or bonus. It’s not reported to HMRC as PAYE etc so it’s down to the receiver to report any changes to capital as per their commitments.
It’s nothing to do with Monzo and Monzo are not held accountable for this. If the customer is concerned, they can opt out of the double payday.
Yes, it’s a requirement for a customer to inform the relevant authority. I just think it would be good for Monzo to highlight that winning a prize might affect ones entitlement to benefits.
But that’s nothing to do with Monzo?
Commitments for benefit are for the claimants to adhere to, not Monzo. If they forget then that’s on them.
I work in the benefits sector just fyi.
It is as Monzo have decided to opt all their customers into this automatically.
Ironically, in some ways its the opposite of your concern that you won’t be included in the draw as your salary comes from DWP and could be confused as benefit payments.
Still, I am interested to hear what Monzo think rather than their other customers.
I will be, this was resolved fairly quickly.
Salary also doesn’t enter the account the same ref/merchant name as a benefit payment does.
Does Monzo also need to make reference to folk living at home; they must tell their parents they got double payday so they can charge double rent?
Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it…
Did Monzo get back to you about your salary being excluded? In the same boat ![]()
I got in touch with @AlanDoe and sorted it from there, he may drop you a message once he sees this to let you know the steps.
I’ve already heard a few people mention this. I’m impressed by the marketing person that worked out by giving each customer the equivalent of 1 penny of scratch card value per month (based on typical odds and payouts), they could turn this into a feature.
And don’t forget the onslaught of “Those marketing people in Monzo must have one hell of a gambling issue” comments its brought along with it ![]()
Gonna be a great month - win a bill paid, double my salary and win the £10K 1p challenge ![]()

If you have more than one source of income then it seems to apply only to the first one received in a month. That’s unfortunate for me because I have two private pensions - a very small one and a large one. Guess which gets paid first each month!
To the contrary, this month I have a mid month salary advance for Christmas… yikes ![]()
Also curious about whether someone would be excluded the following month should they win
@Ellie
I am in a similar situation. My main teacher salary is paid on the last working day of the month, but I also have a tiny little one (like £30 per month, less on some months) from a separate lunchtime supervision contract, and that comes in in the middle of the month…
Needless to say I have already asked to change the bank account where that one is paid! Perhaps you should consider the same for your pension?
I hope not.
This really annoys me. I’ve been with Monzo since it was known as Mondo. Loyal since 2017, yet because I received my money via benefits, I’m excluded from this. One thing that Monzo has taught me is loyal doesn’t pay. I’ll be moving my money out of Monzo, starling does exactly the same, if not better, than Monzo for FREE.
