Ring Subscription sees second 40% price hike within 2 years

I found my Eufy doorbell disappointing. Too many false positives (e.g. the wheels of passing cars being recognised as faces) and would frequently completely miss people walking up to the front door.

I’ve now had a Ring for 18 months and it has been excellent - hardly any false positives and has never missed anybody walking up the drive (that I’m aware of). I know that there have been security/privacy issues in the past but I’m really not bothered about that, tbh. It’s the only Ring device that I have so the subscription isn’t too bad.

My alarm system was already built in when I moved into the flat. So that’s the standard alarm, so for me it would be purely the doorbell and i want a camera out in the patio. Preferrably one that is battery powered but with motion detection so that the floodlights come on when it detects movement

Going by these requirements would you suggest Ring over say Google ones? One that works with google home would be ideal as i control my hue lights etc through google home. I know Ring doesn’t work with apple homekit

I’ve never used Google’s cameras so don’t know much about them. Ring has a battery powered option and the cameras with integrated lights can be configured to come on when motion is detected. But I think these are probably standard features for all competing systems.

Ring integration with other Amazon smart home products is better than with Google Home. For example Echo Hub, Echo Show and I think Fire TV can be configured to automatically show video feed when doorbell is pressed. I have an Echo Show near my front door and find this useful. Ring + Google Home integration lacks this particular feature but I think has some degree of integration (not sure exactly what though). I expect Google/Nest cameras (and probably some independent options) would have better integration with Google Home.

I’m a big Google fan and have a Nest Battery doorbell. Works as expected.

Also, I already have a Google One subscription which gives me Doorbell access included in the price.

And on the off chance you’ve got a new Pixel, you’ll have a years free Gemini subscription which includes this.

I’d have to disagree with that! As I said above, it’s the most well-behaved doorbell that I’ve had with months of battery life on a single charge. My family have them, too, and we often share interesting videos.

I agree that cloud-based processing is sub-optimal. If there is one thing I’d like improved with Ring I wish they offered an in-home hub that could be used for processing. But typically I get notifications within about 4 seconds of event starting. Is it instantaneous with Nest cameras?

Do you live in a harsh environment? I’m in London and have had 4 outdoor Ring cameras for more than 5 years. None have needed replacing.

What storage / event history do you actually get without a subscription? The following page explains what you get with a subscription but not without…

My doorbell’s WiFi was a bit unpredictable to start with but then I locked it to the nearest mesh hub and the signal has been in the 40s ever since. My mother’s and sister’s have been fine, although both of theirs are in the 50s but still green. A friend had trouble with the signal but Ring replaced it and the replacement has been fine.

I’ve not tried any of the cameras so I’ll take your word on those

I have the Logitech one and have no complaints. It still doesn’t seem to be available in this country so I just bought it from Amazon US and they shipped it with no issues.

I wanted one that worked with HomeKit without any hacky extras or I’d have gone for the Google one.

Decent roundup but would have been better if he included information on vehicle detection.

This is one of the areas I’d like to see Ring improve. Currently smart alert options for Ring are limited to “person” and “other motion” (and some also have “package” alerts), so if I want to be alerted when vehicles enter my driveway I have to enable “other motion” which also leads to alerts I’m not interested in (e.g. alerts triggered by animals on driveway).

I believe Nest and some other doorbells have a specific vehicle alert option.

Is there any integration between the Ring doorbell and the Google ecosystem?

I thought Amazon had refused to do this…

It used to be possible to add via the Google Home app and get a basic level of integration. But looks like even that has now been removed…
