PayPoint Shops don’t know how to process cash deposits

I’ve never actually used or seen one of these. Maybe they just aren’t a big thing in my part of the UK.
Had a quick google and apparently my legacy bank only has 3 of these in the whole country.

I suppose everyone is in a different boat
I live in a rural-ish area and the closest PP is about 2 mins away, closest PostOffice is about 10 mins away and closest bank is about 20 mins away.

It depends on the bank but as with everything look for a bank the suits your needs. There are banks with lots of cash deposit ATMs, plenty with cheque imaging or no fee cash deposits and high interest savings etc.

It’s standard for that bank’s branded ATM (e.g. you can deposit with a Halifax ATM if you have a Halifax account, Barclays if you have a Barclays account, etc), but is not cross-bank.

There is an cross-bank deposit scheme run by by LINK, but I’m not sure of anyone who has implemented it.

I haven’t seen ATM deposits in years. I didn’t know anyone was still doing it!

But then basically every other bank has their own branches plus the post offices, so it’s not worth a quid. I rarely use cash and typically only have it when I’ve been forced to pay cash somewhere and have change, or I’ve been given it. Depositing little amounts and being charged for it, which is something no other bank in my experience has done, is a bit annoying.

Then there’s the other side - where PayPoint retailers are getting ripped off, but no one is saying that Monzo should charge simply having an account, contacting customer services, making card transactions among with pretty much everything else that incurs a fee.

I’ve pretty much stopped using my Monzo account now as I just don’t see the benefits over other services now.

Why was this post flagged?

Yes, I do, it costs me more than a quid to pay for parking (or risk getting a parking ticket) near either of my closest legacy bank branches, there are none within walking distance!

Let’s keep this on cash deposits since that’s what the thread is about.

Presumably because:

a) people don’t deposit cash so don’t care, or
b) as has been said a few times, the car parking charge to go somewhere else is more than £1.

It’s a question that’s been answered more than once in the thread. You have to remember that not everyone has the same priorities.

(The ‘and Starling’ always makes me laugh! I’m sure there are many other non-high street banks that could also be mentioned.)

I think for the most part the people increasing invested in Monzo aren’t using cash or don’t mind losing £1 or saving up before depositing the cash.

I think those who depend more on cash will go elsewhere where its more welcoming for cash deposits.

From my perspective, I think cash deposits for Monzo are more of a 'its there for the rare occasion if needed, and £1) than an actual day to day service for those who use cash more.

No it doesn’t, but Monzo is clearly not for everyone, regardless if Monzo suggest this.

And off the topic we go again…

Dude we get it. You don’t like that Monzo charge or have limitations on some features.

Please stop going into topics and cherry picking parts of peoples comments to continually repeat yourself and start the same old arguments.

We’ve heard your points and I’m sure Monzo has too, let’s just leave it at that please.

Thank you for all your insights. Really interesting to read.
Makes sense now why I have been refused.
But every time I have been in I have purchased something and also one time I got charged 50pence (cash) for topping up my Monzo.
I can understand you wanting to remove the machine.

Just for comparison, Monese offers topping up via PP and the Post Office.
PP fee is 3.5%, Minimum deposit £3.
Post Office fee is 2%, Minimum deposit £2

Well I was looking forward to going and paying some cash into my Monzo account but after reading this I’m a bit worried…wish me luck and I will report back how it went !

Actually pretty easy- I kinda went into the coop and with a confidence said I needed to pay this onto my monzo card through Paypoint.

They guy was helpful and it went through a chain of 3 employees until they found the person who knew how to do it.

All in all done in under 3 minutes so can’t complain.

I have heard of PP retailers charging an ‘admin’ fee around the 50p to help cover costs but it goes against your PP contract, they shouldn’t be charging but I can understand why they do it. I am not sure what action PP take if you are caught charging customers.

Just wanted to report that the following PayPoint location just refused to pay into Monzo because “they only support Western Union”. This is despite me having used that same location twice. The woman practically insinuated we were lying.

@simonb when is Monzo going to acknowledge that PayPoint as a partner is a total disaster and inform us that you are actively looking at alternatives?

Further when are you going to realise that actually being able to deposit money into our Monzo accounts is kind of fundamental? Rather than a half hearted approach to cash deposits, and a reluctance to work on cheque imaging, these issues should be crucial to rectify. All you are doing is ratifying the concerns of many who say a digital only bank is a bad idea compared to the bricks and mortar branch that I now have to go to to deposit my money, and the bank I am unable to leave because Monzo haven’t yet been able to fulfill all basic requirements of a bank account.

Wake up - this is damaging your reputation.
