Payment Blocked

A legitimate card payment is repeatedly being blocked from my card. It was made on a flight when I didn’t have internet connection and the vendor must not have noticed that it didn’t go through. I now clearly can’t enter the chip and pin on request as I am far away from the location and the flight crew probably varies. A new payment request is declined every couple of days. It is only a few pounds for a hot drink and I’d like to just accept it so that it doesn’t keep happening for eternity. It is such a small amount that I am keen not to call up and try to explain over the phone. I couldn’t find an obvious route to send an email to the vendor company.

Is there any means to accept a payment in advance?

There’s no way to accept it in advance. Why does it keep declining? Is it because you’ve gone over your contactless limit? If so make another Chip & Pin transaction and that might get it to work next time?

Because in flight terminals are notoriously bad - and Monzo cards in particular seem to be patchy with them. There has to be a reason TUI still blocks them. It can’t just be because ‘Barry from Bristol’ once bought a load of Vodkaaa on a flight to Zante and the payment chucked.

@HPat it shouldn’t need a Chip and Pin, presuming the money is sufficient to pay for it, it’ll probably go through or the vendor will stop trying for it and that’ll be that.

You could raise it with Monzo in Chat, but there’s little they can do here. Enjoy the free drink.

I meant what reason does it give in the app. The post makes it sound like they’re being told to re-attempt as C&P which happens when one reaches the contactless cap, no?

I know, I was riffing off the reason why which is different to yours, which is equally valid.

I wonder if the OP was travelling with one of the airlines that specficially says no Monzo etc, hence the problems? If it was, then why did you use the card, when they have said explicitly we don’t accept it?
I’m sure there’s also a way for the merchant to force the transaction through, back in ye olde days when I worked in a shop there was an option on our terminal. I never had to use it though.

It would make zero difference.

Hi all, thank you so much for all the replies and for the patience while I followed advice. The recommendation to find an opportunity to use the card for a separate pin payment was a good one. I had ended up using my credit card for all other payments and so this simple fix had been missed. I paid for something back in England with chip and pin and, as of today, the airline payment has gone through.

Seems silly now to have posted and used your valuable time, but it got me to where I should have been in the first place.

Thanks again!
