Paying Cash At PayPoint

What about going to a Post Office?

I honestly had no idea I could do this with HSBC and it never crossed my mind to check. I’ve never seen any comms from HSBC saying I could use Post Office services.

I’m away now until November so I’ll do it when I’m back (and I’ve completed the mandatory quarantine if required).

You can bank at the Post Office with most banks - bar Monzo - though the exact services available may differ.

With respect to HSBC:

Tried this feature out yesterday — you get a free allowance each month via Monzo 0lus Handy if you’ve got cash lying around. Fairly easy to do, I went to my local spar, handed over my card and cash. Account updated in 10 minutes. Very easy.

If I’m honest I think it’s less about Ignorance and more closely related to the profitability for PayPoint terminal-owners to do certain actions.

It seems there’s a lot of non-ePOS activity that have high fees / minimal benefit to the retailer to handle - which may result in independent retailers ‘selectively’ choosing what paypoint services they will offer.

Post offices can be just as bad. A few years ago I tried to deposit some cash to a first direct account via the post office and initially they said they didn’t support it at all then insisted I needed a paying in book, which I’m not sure even exists for FD as they have no branches.

That’s when I learned to get a basic bank account with a local bank and pay in there & transfer. No hassle, works for the rare cases I need to do deposit cash.

So here’s the response from PayPoint.

For the record this was an Esso with a Budgens store. I wouldn’t usually stop there, but I was on the way to the ferry terminal and fancied the bonus Nectar points and AMEX points offered on fuel. I have a feeling the person behind the counter had been instructed not to accept our cards.

Good Evening,

Thank you for your email.

We are deeply sorry to hear of the poor experience you had at this store.

Retailers are not permitted to refuse service to PayPoint customers, and any PayPoint store should be able to process this transaction. It is disappointing to hear that this store is not acting in line with our policies.

We will be following this up with the store in question, and reminding them of their contractual agreements to offer PayPoint services. We will then monitor the store for further complaints of this nature, if we receive these, appropriate action will be taken against the store.

We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Whilst our investigations are ongoing, you may wish to use the following link to locate an alternative PayPoint store: www.paypoint.com/storelocator

Thank you for taking the time to report this, and please do not hesitate to get back in touch if you have any further queries.

Kind Regards,
