Passed Monzo Interview, but no start date

You have to be on payroll on the 28th of Feb to count for furlough leave

I think you’ve misunderstood me. I mean the person they’re emailing is furloughed hence the long out of office reply date

Ah yes, that might be the case

This is a new world. The poster hasn’t done anything wrong - they’ve been honest. Surely ItS for monzo to acknowledge their obvious but understandable failure and resolve. Isn’t transparency part of the monzo mission?

Everyone in this thread including the op has been respectful.

I’m in this exact same situation too  I had an interview early March and passed and was given a start date, which (understandably) has now been delayed due to coronavirus.

Just wondered if the OP has heard any more information?

I’m so keen and excited to start my journey with Monzo :orange_heart:

The last time this was brought up the solution was to reach out to the person who has been handling your application. If there is no response you’ll just have to be patient as they may be working reduced hours or be furloughed.

Hi! Happy to hear we will be working together soon  The last time I asked there wasn’t any news, but I’ve heard it’s likely to be after summer. They did send a really nice email last month to keep in touch, acknowledging that it must be difficult to not be able to start yet, and linking to resources for help getting through lockdown

I don’t want to sound negative, but I would continue to look for new opportunities.

Monzo have/will be making people redundant, there’s people on furlough, I wouldn’t have thought that new starters are going to be high up the list.

If you’ve been successful in a highly specialised role, then you may still get started as you hoped, but if it’s a more “generic” role, then you might not be so lucky.

Good luck!

Fingers crossed as this situation must be very stressful for you.:crossed_fingers:

With reference to the 120 redundancies Monzo has made, my understanding of how redundancy works is that those roles technically no longer exist - and Monzo could find themselves in hot water if they then brought in new hires to fill similar roles moving forwards. Depending on what those 120 roles were, and what the position you’ve been accepted for, would dictate my next move.

To be clear I am no expert on redundancy, and perhaps it’s different if you’ve already been accepted into a role prior to when the cuts were made.

Very tough situation and best of luck.

Redundancy is often extremely complicated in the UK. (I work in HR - I have to do too much of this :pensive:) There are a couple of scenarios where people could be made redundant at the same time as new hires being on boarded in similar positions but it is extremely unlikely. I would not be expecting to start with Monzo for at least the next three months and if I were waiting on a start date would continue to apply to other opportunities.

I don’t want really want to comment on this any further as Monzo employees facing redundancy don’t need us speculating here. Sensitive subject all round I think.

I accepted a COp job with Monzo back in February and I only just heard this week that they can no longer take me on.
Very frustrating, especially now when it’s going to be extremely difficult to find a decent job.
Pretty disappointed, I can’t lie.

Sorry to hear that there’s many people around the country in the same position with other employers, can only hope you find something else decent in the future

I know this is a tough time and I know you must be disappointed but did you not see this coming?

You didn’t have to wait until they said that to apply to other places.

Yes I saw it coming and I’ve been applying to other places since the start of lockdown.
Unfortunately I’m now up against a lot of other candidates.
I just think Monzo have handled the situation pretty poorly, leaving people hanging.

good luck Meg , dont be disheartened , if Monzo were going to offer employment to you before this all kicked off you must have had the right skills above other unsuccessful applicants, unfortunately circumstances took over.

In my opinion, Monzo should have made you aware as soon as feasibly possible that they knew they wouldn’t be able to take you. I would have expected that to happen either before or immediately after job cuts got out to the press. The fact it didn’t is nothing short of mismanaged.

Not much you can do other than move on. I’m sure other places would love to have you and treat you with a little more respect. Good luck, I wish you the best!

You can’t possibly know that they didn’t do exactly this.

For example, as part of the redundancy consultation process they may have offered existing employees transfers to the position(s) these prospective new hires were to fill. Existing employees always have (legal) precedence over new hires. In this scenario it’s entirely possible that the people team at Monzo didn’t know until this week that they didn’t have positions for candidates that are waiting.

As ever on any forum, it’s easy to play guessing games as to what’s gone on and then be critical of the results. However it’s hard to remember that what we’re criticising are only our own options of what might have happened.

In part this is why threads end up getting closed.

Of course he doesn’t know that. He just wants to Monzo bash.

Is that anything like the Monster Mash?
