Overseas travel “Welcome to <country>“ notification not working?

Not sure if this has all been cleared up now etc? But just thought I’d add on here.

Had this fail for my last two trips, and saw some people posting that it had even been removed per a message from cops(?) but not sure if that was platform specific.

Either way, landed in Morocco yesterday and don’t have data on so didn’t get anything ASAP but after I made my first card transaction at dinner I got the ‘welcome’ notification and the option to categorise transactions :ok_hand:t2: (Edit: was on WiFi at dinner but still no notification until transaction made)

Interesting - I’ve never had a notification from Monzo when switching my phone on/opening the Monzo app after landing in the new location, but after your message I checked Privacy > Location and Monzo was not listed :man_facepalming:makes sense that Monzo is not able to detect my location if it does not have permission to access my location.

I would definitely not have rejected the request so I don’t think I have ever been asked for location permissions. Checking Monzo settings I can see the location-based security was off - turning it on triggered the request for permission, and after granting I got a ‘welcome home’ notification after being in Portugal last month (haven’t yet made a transaction since).

So I assume the notification based on location change (not on new transaction) is coupled to the location-based security, or at least you need to do it to trigger the permissions request.

I do not get the notification till I make the first transaction, even if I have internet signal.

I normally get these as soon as I connect to the internet in a country. Recently (last 2 weeks) I went to the USA and I didn’t get one. However when I crossed into Mexico I did, and then returning to the USA I got one. It was strange. I am on test flight and the new UI.

Well, the last few times I’ve travelled abroad I’ve had these notifications.

Last year we staying in UK.

Abroad again today and this notification did not appear in Monzo.

Is it broken, has it been withdrawn or is it now a Monzo Plus feature?

[edit] the message has arrived some three hours after arrival. So it does work. Sometimes. But not as soon as you arrive in the airport like it used to. :+1:

It hasn’t worked for me since it was a prepaid card.

Unless I have landed in the wrong country, the absence of this would not bother me in the slightest personally.

My edit was going to say exactly that …and then it worked (three hours late) on the current account.

It’s not about whether it bothers me or not, it’s about a change in expected behaviour of the account.

It’s worked for me on various trips to Europe & the USA in 2019 upon landing, but didn’t register a 5-day trip to the US in January 2020 at all. Haven’t been anywhere since, for obvious reasons, but hopefully will be travelling again to a EU destination in October. Let’s see.:flight_departure::flight_arrival::sun_with_face:

Pretty inconsistent, in my recent experience:

  • It worked for me when I travelled to Switzerland on 20 July. I received it around three hours after landing.

  • However, I travelled there again on Friday, and have so far not received one.

Mine in Switzerland (two years ago) arrived as soon as I switched on phone in airport after landing.

Today in Denmark took around three hours. Maybe I was just lucky before? I don’t know what Monzo’s expected behaviour on this is? But it always used to be very quick.
