I’ve always thought that I’d get a OnePlus if I switched to Android - Seems to offer the best value for money by some distance (for phones available in the UK).
My frustrations with this one would be…
-
The 6 month update cycle - I think it would probably stop me from buying it in the first place, knowing I would have an out of date phone very soon.
-
The “not instant” thumb reader - Love the fact it’s under the screen, but I’d rather it be quicker (and not so bright).
-
The fact you can buy different RAM options (6GB and 8GB) - I mean… Why? Do we really need to complicate the phone market, like the PC makers complicated the PC market with 5,000 different configurations? There should be an explainer document on what the extra 2GB of RAM will allow you to do.
That aside, it looks really good - I love the tear drop notch as well.
I guess the counterpoint to this is that it allows you to stay on top of the latest technologies and processors if you choose to change it every 6 months. It might well be another 6 months before other Android OEMs ship anything with a in-screen fingerprint reader, for example.
Yeah, I get that, but the % of people who change their phone every 6 months must be tiny in comparison to those who have it for a year or more (these days, it seems to be 2/3 years).
I’d consider myself to be an early adopter of tech, and I like to buy the latest and greatest most of the time - But I’d struggle with a company who released hardware updates every 6 months.
I guess, it appeals to those people who aren’t techy - The kind of people who go into the shops and want “a good deal” - The OnePlus will always seem like one of the best on the market (cause it’s never older than 6 months old), for a relatively low price.
I’m sure there are also a load of other customer types this will appeal to as well, so I appreciate it’s big sweeping generalisation.
I really wouldn’t lose sleep over it. The 6T is a minor update over the 6. The new SOCs always come out around March so anything this late in the year is too early to have significantly bettter internals.
If the Mrs didn’t already have a 6 I’d be more tempted to pick up a discounted one then get this (not that it’s a bad device).
Edit
Just noticed it’s also gone up another £30 over the 6. I know they’re still relatively good value but I’d wager they’ve proportionately increased more since the 3 than any other phone.
I’m tempted to upgrade. Was hoping for some water resistance but I’m due an upgrade from my 5T soon
I like the way the screen looks with the reduced notch size but I think even with bigger notches you get used to it. The in-screen fingerprint reader looks good but I didn’t think there was a problem with the old system, it was fast and reliable.
Overall i think if you don’t own a 6 already then buy the 6T.
For anyone thinking of upgrading remember to lookout for referral links.
Here is mine https://www.oneplus.com/uk/invite#HHWDP95FEMTFHLO (we each get £20 credit to spend on accessories). I used this when I purchased my OnePlus 6 in the summer.
The phone is now on sale! Just bought two of the 8GB/256GB models, cant wait!
Day phone and night phone?
Left ear and right ear?
One for me and one for the Mrs, but liking the ideas suggested haha. I actually cancelled the order direct from OnePlus as it was going to be delivered on Friday, whereas Amazon now liase with OnePlus and offer next day
Hopefully we have some OnePlus users here! I just got the new 6T and have had a play with it over the weekend.
Got to be honest, I think it might actually be worse then my old 5T (which admittedly I bought the very best one on offer.) Anyone got the 6T and can convince me why I should love it?
Im sporting a 6T at the moment and cant fault it. Whats your concerns with yours out of curiosity?
My partner has one and the only thing she likes about it is the look and the OS…
She hates it though. Apparently the fingerprint sensor is rubbish, it’s audio is poor quality, the night time camera mode isn’t all its cracked up to be and that it’s got no headphone jack…you within warranty?
Fingerprint scanner seems quite temperamental. It feels much heavier. Camera doesn’t seem to be a massive improvement.
The screen looks lovely, although I compared it to a Huawei Mate Pro on Monday and the screen didn’t look as crisp…
Ha I just replied listing most of those things!
Beat you to it! Haha!
Seems like they’re common pain points for 6T users though - just seen a couple of reviews online listing the exact same things!
Well I jumped from the 3T to the 6T so sadly cant vouch for the 5T but I do agree with the fingerprint scanner, it is longer and sometimes tempermental but I also use the face unlock feature so there isn’t many times I use it.
I’ve had bluetooth headphones for a while so can’t say i’ve noticed the audio issues and I never use the stock camera app anyways, I get the Pixel camera APK from XDA developers to make use of their ‘exclusive’ features.
Been on a 6T for 2 weeks now. Really enjoying it - however I do miss the headphone jack just a little…
