The question posed was
who would they prefer to replace him?
I’d prefer Kylie.

Andrew Bridgen possibly?
I am giving a serious answer. The Conservative party could choose literally anyone and they would be better than this liar and law breaker. It is the parties job to now pick someone from the large number of currently sitting MPs.
If their defence is “the rest of the party is incapable” then that is a much much bigger problem.
How does it actually work if Boris was to resign?
Would some that think they have a hope put themselves forward and then there’s an internal party vote? I presume Boris couldn’t name his successor?
Pretty much. Ignore the headline - scroll down a bit. Same process.
A slight hyperbole really. There is a difference between the right thing to do and how legally our democracy works. Boris should rightly resign for what he did.
Legally, our democracy states that breaches to the ministerial code are ultimately at the discretion of the Prime Minister, and there is no law forcing a resignation of a Prime Minister if fined by the police. Therefore our democracy is functioning as designed.
The legal way to force a Prime Minister to resign is to continue to use our functioning democracy to either pass a vote of no confidence in Parliament, unelect them or their them at the next election, or to change the law through an Act of Parliament.
Like it or not, our democracy is still functioning fine.
Boris could, in theory, recommend his successor, but the Tory party would have to accept the recommendation and it would be such a toxic and tarnished recommendation that, honestly, if Boris does have someone in mind, he’d be better of keeping quiet about his endorsement.
Ultimately, were he to resign, he would be resigning from leader of the conservatives (which also means prime minister, because they have the most MPs), which would trigger a Tory leadership election. He could also resign as an MP, which would trigger a bi election in his constituency.
As for other potential leaders, there are a few… Tom Tugendhat, Liz Truss, Jeremy Hunt. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that it’s Boris or no one!
He won’t though. Nor will the party get rid of him. He’ll fight the next election and probably win it.
On the bright side…. There’s always the option of ‘flexing’ ones fine over 3months……
Reports this morning that he could be in line for 3 more fines.
