Hi did monzo give your money back i also got scammed by number spoof and when i challenged the fraudster told me to check the back of my monzo card and it matched monzos number ao i had no reason not to believe him
Hi did monzo refund u i am in a similar situatoon!
Please take note of the following comment. It’s unlikely that two situations will be the same.
A friend of mine received the same scam call (didn’t fall for it fortunately) so I decided to give them a ring, gave them some fake details to run through their script and eventually got a Monzo account number/sort code to pay my supposedly-outstanding tax to. When I pretended to make the payment and they obviously didn’t see it arrive they provided another account to try again, that one is sort code 236972 so not sure what that bank is (Revolut?). The call dropped after this, either it’s a technical issue or maybe they finally realized they’re being played.
I’ve reported that account number to Monzo, does anyone know what the other sort code is?
Even more interesting is all the scams linked to it when you check out the company name, I guess that’s too be expected with the type of accounts they supply
One of my searches brought it up as Revolut’s old sort code, so I wonder if they still have old accounts on those or if an entity even less ethical than Revolut has picked it up now.
I looked into getting in touch with Revolut just in case but it seems like there’s absolutely no way to talk to a human unless you’re already a customer and can log into their app.
Am I doing something wrong as it’s been a week for me and I haven’t heard anything from Monzo?
These things take quite a while, certainly longer than a week. There are lots of people involved in the chain and it’s likely that Monzo are waiting to hear back from others - like the bank you sent money to who will want to do their own checks and procedures etc.
I understand it’s hard to be patient but they will get back to you as soon as they have an update.
Hi Laura
Have you heard anything? I am in the same situation and trying to see how long Monzo are taking to get back to people to settle my worries
To be fair, I would say I get calls about this scam at least 5 or 6 times a day. And that’s just the people who call the police about it.
It’s a lot more common than I thought.
Thankfully most people don’t pay over money and realise it’s a scam quickly.
I get a lot of calls purporting to be from Amazon asking if I want to continue with my 79.99 sub or cancel it , Visa saying a payment has been taken but we have put a hold on it for you, can you confirm your date of birth . , HMRC saying I owe them money, or they owe me money … I chat with them for as long as I can, they always ask me to download details onto my computer at which point I say to them you’re a scummy thief aren’t you trying to steal my money at which point they hang up
you would think they would wipe my number off their database as they aren’t going to be successful but no they keep coming
Ah sorry I meant people calling me at work to report.
Thankfully I’ve never actually received one myself! It would be interesting to see how convincing they are though.
Hiya it’s been 11 days and no updates. However everyone’s case is different so may here back in a shorter time frame. Sorry this happened to you and I hope it works out for you in the end
They’re probably calling hundreds, if not thousands, of people a day with a robo dialler and some form of list.
They are convincing in terms of urgency. They definitely aren’t convincing if you have the slightest idea of how tax court cases (or any court case) work. In my case once I assured them I wanted to pay and didn’t need want any more trouble they claimed they will call back from the court (they made me lookup the real number of some high court on the government’s website, which they would then spoof on the next callback) and that they’ve appointed me a public defender that I should wire the outstanding tax money to (this is their strategy for working around Confirmation of Payee, as the name would obviously not match HMRC).
At least there were no gift cards in this case - looks like it’s so easy to get money mules in the UK that you don’t need to bother with gift cards or crypto.
I got an automated phone call on Friday about national insurance fraud with my number on the border of Wales. Then a please press 1 to speak to someone.
Right ok then at least make it believable, I’d not get an automated call out the blue or a human on the other end.
The border of Wales 🤦🤷🤣
Can you DM me the number they called from? (check it on Google first to make sure it’s a known scam number and not a targeted attack)
I’m tempted to call back and see if I can get any money mule account numbers out of them. I’ve been having trouble finding active tech support scammer numbers so this would be an interesting lead.
I delete them all from my history after they’ve vanished, saves me thinking later who was that who rang me
I am a Trainee Solicitor and have a knowledge of how court cases work, and yet they were still very convincing especially when I’d spoken with the actual bank earlier and the scammers knew that too and claimed it was the bank calling me back. They’ve tried to get me multiple times before and always failed until last week. Some of them are scarily convincing and I hope it never happens to you.
