Shin splints are a bit of a myth as a real shin splint stops you walking for a long time. it’s normally down to tight calf muscles and the muscle at the front of the shin not being looked after a little rest then some flexibility will help. I find a foam roller on the shins really works. But before running good warm ups should help and if when running the shins hurt a calf and shin stretch should do the trick. Also the wrong footwear for the individual can cause it.
I’m military and it’s a huge complaint by squaddies and is usually easily rectified with a few changes.

I’d agree here. Also trail running is normally better for the joints as there is less impact than on tarmac. Much prettier and less traffic too. And if you plan it well with a few mates you can and up at a nice pub for a well earned pint of the black stuff (or what ever tickles your fancy)

Ha. I can’t stop at a pub while running, I’ll never make it back.

Yeah, some of the runs I’ve completed have been great. I have been to the Brecons in Wales recently and gone off grid. Nothing better :call_me_hand:

I like breacon I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years. I really like coastal running at the moment though there’s some great scenery on the UK coast.
I’m a huge advocate for finishing my runs at the pub though as beer has all the things in it you need to replace after a long run (well that’s my excuse anyway).

He’s been doing a lot of stuff I don’t understand, seen a couple of running physio specialists and they’re def getting better!

Yeah a lot of people don’t realise there even is a muscle at the front of the shin so it gets neglected. A descent physio should sort it quite quickly.
Compression socks/tights may well help him too as a quick cheap fix might be worth a try and invest in a good foam roller aldi ones are great when they have them in so do cheap for the quality and sports direct do a good selection

yeah he wears compression stuff, it’s a super sexy look :smirk: got all the rollers, went and got assessed for better shoes and stuff. he ran last Monday and didn’t suffer

Haha I look fabulous in my tights :joy::joy:. Small changes and a little knowledge and understanding of your body really help. Fingers crossed he can get back to running well again and with no pain. I’ve had plenty of injuries over the years and know how frustrating it is. Good luck to him if he needs any advice feel free to message me I’m by no means an expert but an willing to make suggestions and offer help where I can.

At the minute just running, the ultra is not till next year so will be starting to change things up. Its a local run to me so will be doing plenty of recce runs between now and then. I’ve ran bits of the course and the views over the pennines are stunning

I love the off road, I’m one of them who runs down a road I’ve never been on before, see a dirt path and just divert my planned route completely. I live right next to the moors so there is plenty of options to choose from.

12 tourist so far, really struggle with work and being on shifts

Just like @Jimmyb878 said 60-70% of your heart rate and were you can hold a conversation. It can vary on what your goals are whether it be speed, lose weight, distance, just for fun. Once you decide on a goal, you can adapt a training plan to suit.

Is it bad to say my running club plan our routes around pubs, near Christmas we run pub to pub having a pint in each :joy:

I head the xcountry team at work and we always run to the pub at our weekly training session. And after an event/comp always go for a few too many pints. The social aspect of a running club is what keeps people coming along as with most sports clubs. I also play cricket where the club house is a big draw and beer is consumed even during play so during the summer my beer consumption probably outweighs any health benefits of sport and fitness, but it’s enjoyable and bid rather be enjoying my running and cricket than just slogging away at it.

I might start a running club when I retire from the army for aging booze hounds we could start and finish at a pub and be sponsored by a beer company.

Congrats to caster semenya in Doha today. Proving to the world that it’s talent not the extra testosterone that makes her a winner

No running for me this weekend I’ve got large quantities of booze to consume at army v navy

Park run has finished for me until the end of the cricket season. I had planned doing both, but I’ve decided it is too optimistic.

The bank holiday means there will be a run, just not a Park run.

I love the cricket season arriving.
It’s a putty the weekend weather might ruin a few first games of the season.

I’m a pretty keen runner. Do parkrun In about 21 minutes, and PB for a half is 1:39.

I’m going to run my first ever marathon (Amsterdam) in October. The longest distance I’ve ever run is half marathon. Anyone got any tips, or anyone know any particular training programs available online?

Look up someone called James Dunne. He’s a running blogger. He does rehab videos on you tube, but also does plans for distance running. His website is a useful reference tool.
