Slick card animations!
Yes! More animations!
They are slick. To save people a click, here they are… (if the forum allows them)
From my perspective this feels like a misstep in terms of brand integrity. I was literally talking to support yesterday about the final steps in ditching First Direct for Monzo (after 20+ years) and a key part of that decision was perceived integrity (and your ethical rating). Having seen the Monzo Plus approach I’m now less sure.
Yes I get it’s optional, but the paucity of what you’re offering for £3 / £6 makes you look much more like the money-grabbing old school banks than a transparent ‘friend’ (which given the amazing ease of use and great support is how I’ve tended to think about Monzo so far). It feels like the internal discussions focussed on ‘How much can we get away with?’ rather than on adding real value to those of us outside London. And taking away something that was free (the personalised monzo.me link) and putting it behind a paywall is always going to make people feel cheated
Lastly, the age limit on insurance (I’m 50) works to make me feel less part of a community that has always seemed inclusive.
Don’t get me wrong I really love Monzo, but this feels like a counterproductive step in its current form. A more palatable alternative might be “subscribe to any of our bolt ons and you’ll get free Monzo Plus membership” as opposed to paying over the odds for a poor value core product that mostly just gives you access to additional extra cost products and services
This is a great idea
Couldn’t agree more. It’s devaluing the brand by trying to lazily cash in on it.
There’s a reason you can’t buy Apple swag in every Apple Store, even though they would probably sell like gangbusters.
Anyone fancy answering this one? Can’t see an answer here.
Completely agree.
I can only really add my own feedback on top of this.
While you are less sure about ditching your long term bank, I’m wondering whether I made a mistake and whether I should move back to a more traditional bank. If there is one thing I miss, it’s have my phone and travel insurance, I even miss the Tastecard I got with my Natwest account because I was saving £15 a time at my favourite Indian restaurant that my waistline would probably tell you I visit a little too often.
I love the idea of the potential benefits being modular; pick and choose what you require to tailor your plus account to what you actually want and/or need. When I was with Halifax, I had breakdown cover bundled in with the other benefits I wanted when I didn’t even have a car or drive. I couldn’t possibly have used it, but I was paying the same as someone who could use it.
This isn’t the sole reason I would move back though, my issues stem a bit wider. I feel like Monzo are doing a good job generally, but personally speaking features fall just that little bit short - which I find is more frustrating than not having something at all - knowing the is potential there but it will most likely never happen.
Just some examples off the top of my head:
- While I can schedule payments to and from pots on dates, I cannot specify the time on that date. I won’t go in to detail but this would be super useful to me and my wife.
- I’d love to have a “bills” pot that I could point any scheduled payments at rather than have the schedule money to come out of the pot to then be paid.
- My account(s) are only reported to one credit agency - I cannot close my legacy account because not having a long standing account is a negative on my credit report and I’m not sure what the impact of not having a bank at all on there would be.
I knew something like Monzo Plus was coming, I don’t post or visit here much, but I try to keep up to date with what is coming. This price point for what you get is just disappointing. I can’t help but feel like the thinking was that at an initial £3 until other core features are added, maybe people wouldn’t miss that money every month. I’ve tried to justify why I would pay it - but I just can’t.
Like others, I don’t need another card colour, my card sits on top in my wallet and rarely comes out as I generally use GPay. Events are a no-go for me; I am not paying a fortune to get to London, let alone the price it costs to stay there one night. I have never used Monzo.me so there is no benefit from that. And swag, after having read the blog and a good chunk of posts here, there is no detail about what this actually means, people are seemingly assuming it’s just a bonus for going to events.
How Monzo Plus pans out will ultimately make or break it for me as to whether I stick with it. I got on board with the vision, but I am slowly starting to wonder whether I would be better off in the short to medium term elsewhere.
Anyway, long post nearly over, here’s the things I’d like to see:
I’d echo the whole ‘add a modular service and get the Monzo Plus core features as an added bonus’ approach.
Suggested modular features:
- Worldwide Travel insurance.
- Mobile phone insurance.
- Breakdown cover.
- Tastecard or similar.
- Cashback on DD’s and/or with certain retailers.
- Free overdraft to a limit before charges kick in.
- Monthly ticket options or discount offerings (cinemas, theme parks, zoos & safari parks, gigs - the potential list is endless however I don’t know how viable it would be).
- Spotify/Netflix/Amazon/Xbox Live/PS Plus discounts or discounted membership if paid via. Monzo Plus (I only listed these because they are the only ones I use or did use personally).
Does anyone know if the monzo.me usernames are going to be reset after the trial has been completed as well? It feels like offering this to a subset of users is inherently unfair on the users not in the trial?
I like the new colours, but other companies are doing cards in more interesting materials like metal, I think that could be an interesting option. Also to have the word Plus next to Monzo, is in my opinion, for lack of a better word - douchie. The benefits also just don’t seem worth the added £3 (going to £6) a month. A few extra benefits like the £400 withdrawal limit should be added to the base offer.
Cheers, R
@anon41219820 I don’t know if you ever confirmed if the current wording that @Eden picked out from the docs was accurate or not?
Important as it is has been stated as fact by a few forum members based on previous comments.
We have two threads now? I’ve already posted on the previous thread. Will the feedback be collated from both?
But to summarise - I’d love to have all the benefits of a Nationwide Flex Plus account. And I’d be willing to pay £12-£15/month for it.
The most important parts of this are worldwide family mobile phone insurance, breakdown and recovery assistance in uk and eu and worldwide family travel insurance. If you can offer even just these three I would be thrilled!
A bonus extra similar to Nationwide would be to pay a small amount of interest in the current account to offset the monthly cost. This would really be something special.
I +1 this idea.
Competitive, and yet it literally ticks a lot of peoples boxes.
I’m so glad that development time is being used on things like this instead of actual functionality…
There are lots of posts here now so apologies if it’s already been mentioned!
One of the features I would like to see as part of Plus is a higher fee-free overdraft. With many other banks “premier” accounts they offer a higher fee-free overdraft limit which would be a welcome included feature with Plus
Well I certainly know more about the Flexible Savings Pots than COps seem too…
You’re right, that directly relates to the running of operations.
It absolutely does my nut in when people say stuff like that, as if they have a single laptop that a couple of people crowd round and they have to divvy out time very carefully. They have 15 different product teams working on developing different things at the moment. Someone working on a lovely piece of UI/UX that’s really smart looking has absolutely no effect on the production (or lack of) of other parts of the product. Imagine walking up to the counter at a greggs and asking why the person that’s currently working on some of the food that you’re not interested in is bothering with that and not being a 5th hand on the sausage rolls because you’re hungry for some of those.
Greggs have a marketing team who make the stores look decent. You don’t see them making sausage rolls.
In the grand scheme of things I don’t think it adds up to very much time. The little things often mean a lot to some people and having a bare looking app can put people off.
That’s not to say everyone’s priorities are always right though.
And I’d love for that animation to be used for something useful like reordering Pots that people are clamouring for that would be used daily by thousands of customers, rather than something that’s going to been seen once by a very small subset of people.
As a customer and Investor in Monzo I want more useful features. I’m entitled to my opinion, you’re entitled to yours.
I beilive the blog post I shared above highlighted the fact the animation was designed with future use in mind. It’s not tied to just being used for new card designs.
