Ah, I see the ‘could’ has thrown you. My reading of that is:
Online subscriptions could fail.
Why could they fail?
They’re trying to take from a virtual card after you’ve cancelled and no longer have the virtual card.
I think the way they’ve written it is intended to make people think twice about cancelling if they’re actually getting that much use out of virtual cards, is all. I don’t think it was meant to be read the way you have, and that the resulting confusion is accidental.
It may be that the wording gets updated later to remove the ambiguity if there ends up being people who’ve read it like you have contacting support to query it.

Yeah I’m thinking in what circumstances would the online subscriptions not fail, the merchant isn’t going to be like well I see that you no longer have a valid payment, don’t worry it’s on us.
(I know a lot of subs will continue for another 30 days to allow another chance to pay your bill before it’s usually stopped)
I think it’s just word “could” which gives that possiblity of “yes”, “no” and “might do?”.
When it really should be a “yes” you’ll need to add a new valid payment to these.
If you’ve put your physical card details in, or your bank account details instead of any card details.
Again, to try and be nice and clear: they mean “It could fail … because if you’re paying by this method it will no longer work” not “this method could fail”.

I see that side of it. I just think the could will makes more sense here.
Holographic Card will stop working, and Online subscriptions will fail to take payment.
If you pay for them using virtual cards. You’ll need to add a new payment method to continue using them.
Actually that’s a bit wordy, but something like that.
In fact to keep it consistent.
Your holographic card will stop working
Your holographic card will be expire in two weeks. You’ll be sent a new standard card in the meantime to replace it.
Your online subscriptions will stop working
If you pay for them using your virtual cards you’ll need to add a new payment method to continue using them.
But it doesn’t mention payments. The statement is that your subscriptions might stop working - they also might not. Monzo can’t speak on behalf of those providers, which is why they’ve tried to go down that route.
As an example, Amazon prime - they now just cycle through all cards on the account to find one that works. Your subscription won’t stop working if there’s another valid card.
To avoid talking about subscriptions, it might as well just say “any payments to your virtual card will be declined” that’s an irrefutable fact.

Well this would make more sense to me.
As a customer I just want to know where I stand with them.
Existing virtual cards will be deleted, so transactions to these will fail.
