I thought I was being punished!
Sometimes the day before pay day is really tough. Like you’ve got literal pounds to rub together. Being able to go do your big weekly shop the night before is really helpful. I’ve been in that situation many times - it’s difficult to explain how stressful it can be knowing you have money coming in the next day but not being able to do anything.
And when you do get your pay day the evening before, then you can prepare your food the next day. When I get paid a big sum in the morning, I end up spending a load on lunch that day because I feel rich. Getting it the night before and giving me time to spend and plan properly definitely helps, rather than just moving all your paydays forward.
FWIW I’ve never been paid every 4-weeks/28-days, it’s always been on a set date (25th/28th etc) or a set day (last working day of the month/Third Thursday of the month type thing).
Thanks - that worked! I was still in the Get Paid Early UI so I naturally tried it again. I didn’t get paid twice
Well that’s just rude of them
Glad it worked!
But all you are doing is bringing it one month forward… And then you are back to the exact same cycle as before (or potentially a worse cycle because of how the days fall).
Without aiming this at you (but using your example), if someone is living on the bread line and really struggling at the end of the month… Getting paid a day early isn’t going to solve that… Being more financially responsible and managing your money better, is (packed lunches every day, home cooked meals and not eating out etc).
All this feature is doing is potentially alleviating one month of pain… But if it’s that bad, it’ll just create a harder month the following month.
How about this example. I have had a very tough month this month, had to buy a new phone because the old one broke, car insurance came in e.t.c. e.t.c. I normally finish the month with a bit of money to spare, but have had to take out of savings this month as it’s been so tight. So I will be collecting my pay day early this month as it’s been rough, but should still be fine with the extra day next month. Not all months are the same in terms of outgoings.
I’ve said all along there will always be pretty unique circumstances where it may benefit people…
But for others who aren’t as lucky as you, they might bring it forward one month, and then have a 33 day month the next…
absolutely. Some months there are extra expenses, for example the kids need new shoes or there is a school trip to pay for
A good blog about judging others financial choices
I don’t think it’s unique for each month to be variable for outgoings!
Some months are longer than others, and some months are tougher than others, not all months are created equal. If getting paid a few hours earlier helps alleviate some stress for someone then that’s a good thing.
It’s all very well saying that someone needs to be more financially responsable but perhaps thats a lesson they can implement in the second month after a quick and easy fix to an unpleasant situation.
I understand your points but surely you can see the upsides too?
Absolutely - But people are talking about this like it’s some amazing new thing that’s going to change the world… and the reality is, it’ll affect a small number of people for good, and no doubt a small number of people for bad.
All of the supporting arguments are working on the assumption that the person in question has absolutely zero other funds and this extra day is super important.
But I still think, like with many of these arguments, that better financial management is important before these situations happen.
If you need that extra few hours to get paid (for kids stuff etc) then perhaps asses what you don’t need in the month…
Thanks for sharing the images.
I wonder if there’s a way to do this without the dragging cash slider thing?
Thinking from an accessibility point of view, while these are really lovely animations and interations, can you just tap your way through this workflow?
They’ve said there will be an ‘OK’ button at some stage
I get paid weekly on Thursday’s. My salary is now in my account. Brilliant. Except for the fact it has literally no benefit to me. But at least this fad hasn’t been implemented before this longstanding, annoying bug has been fixed: Grrrrrr
Some people find it harder than others to see things from a different point of view but this is definitely the clearest example of the use of this in ‘ordinary’ life that I’ve seen. My best example up until now was my filling the car up at the end of last month when I didn’t have enough to pay with Monzo and then recover automatically (IFTTT) from my fuel pot. This would have handled that for me.
I don’t think anyone is really doing that. I think they are just excited for shiny new feature that makes the day to day (or month to month) plod that little bit brighter. It let’s them have a little more say about when they get paid rather than it solely being the arbitrary decsicion the people they work for have made.
Well here’s a different arguement in favour of this for you. I consider myself to be very financially stable and in no way need the money a few hours early, but I’ll still use this feature simply because I want to. I don’t think it will lead to my ruin.
I’ve never understood why people need to be so passive aggressive on forums… Especially those who are tasked with keeping the place peaceful.
Which is obviously your choice… But it’s not an argument against mine, as you don’t need the money early… You simply want it (I imagine a huge portion of the Monzo customer base will be in exactly the same situation, and do exactly the same as you).
At the end of the day, if someone has the unfortunate circumstance of being backed into a corner and needing (not wanting) their salary a day early… It’s not necessarily going to solve their problems, and could introduce new ones.
It’s all hypothetical of course, and I hope it solves a lot of problems for people
This is where I believe it’s their decision to make and an opportunity for them to learn from the experience.
What I don’t think is right is saying that they should done this or that or known better, and just suck it up.
It’s all very well saying they should plan ahead better (which is true) but that doesn’t help when you’re actually in the middle of a tough time. Get yourself out of the issue and then plan for the next month. Don’t make yourself a martyr when there’s an olive branch available.
You seem to think if someone needs it then they should reflect in missery rather than reflect after a temporary solution. Or at least it’s coming across that way.
Well, gone are my days of reflecting in misery, and I wouldn’t expect anyone else to.
You are also talking about a very small subset of users who would find themselves in the position you are talking about, and I’ve already said that it has the potential to help there - Pretty sure we are arguing the same point on that one.
