The only newspaper that hates Monzo more than the FT is the Telegraph. Both are pretty aligned with vested banking interests, so really they’re just playing to their audience. And I’m pretty sure by “people” here they mean “boomers”.
I’m pretty sure they mean “people.”
I always make a little mental note of which card other people use to pay with when I’m out and about (it started when I tried to spot Monzo cards in the wild).
The vast majority of people of all ages use cards from traditional banks (Santander, Barclays etc).
Of those using app based banks the age definitely skews younger, but the vast majority of payments in general definitely seem to me to be made using trad banks.
ETA I should, perhaps, add that for me Santander is an app based bank. I only ever use the app, never use a branch, and don’t log on to internet banking.
For some of us, Santander is still the “oh yes, they used to be Abbey National” bank
Glad I’m not the only one who does this!
I do the same, only since I first discovered Starling and Monzo in late 2019. See Monzo quite a lot but only seen Starling once or twice.
Starling is so rare, that seeing someone pull out a Starling Business card in the local hardware store a year or two ago is a vivid memory that’s stuck with me. Although, in fairness, Monzo isn’t much more common. Bank of Scotland, Virgin Money, and Lloyds seem to be everywhere up here though. Lloyds, surprisingly so since there’s no branch for them on the island.
Don’t see a whole lot of RBS either, given they’re the dominant presence here, owning the most branches and most ATMs.
I see people out on the monzo app more than I see starling cards
But I’ve seen a few older people with starling cards, never seen them with a Monzo one
Out of all the fintechs, I see Revolut the most, then monzo but rarely consumer starling cards
The odd time I see a revolut card
Surprisingly not a youngster either.
Abbey National gave me my first mortgage. I was struggling to get accepted elsewhere and sat down in a branch of Abbey and the guy was looking at my application and shaking his head and finally said “I don’t think we can help you. Might be different if you had a history of saving with us.”
That was when I suddenly remembered that I’d had £1 in an Abbey National savings account for a few years. Turned out to have been a very wise investment.
Shame about the recent massive Santander data breach…
Yep. I guess it’s just good fortune for me that it seems to have limited to Spain, Chile, and Uruguay (so far).
I really need to get my data people to look at the issuer info on the platform I work on, about which bank is up or down. last time Monzo was 7th biggest, which chimes with the 7th biggest by customer base.
I’ve never seen a Revolut card in the wild before.
Interesting. Santander is domiciled in Spain, and it looks like the breach has hit Spanish speaking countries worst probably.
Wild and unlicensed (still)…
If they had a license maybe I would see them in the wild.
I see Monzo at every TfL/rail gateline, but as the fare cap can be lower with a debit card as opposed to an Oystercard, it’s difficult to know if those cards are buying stuff or just used for travel.
If Revolut had a licence, I’d probably use it as my bank.
At my uni town, I saw a few Monzos but probably similar amounts of those than HSBC, Santander, and NatWest (probably due to them having student accounts). RBS was clearly the most popular though, both among students and members of the public.
Big news!
