Monzo in 2020: looking back and looking forward

Some people come like this endear of openbanking and sharing your banking info with offer apps like let’s say Emma the money management app if offer.

I think theyve purposefully been vague on it because they realise how much that all depends on third partys to get their ships in order.

Ive personally been really disappointed with the speed/reliability being shown by truelayer and the other banks so im sure monzo are too.

With things like that its probably better to undersell and overdeliver as there are so many variables.

The fact RBS can now show Monzo accounts but not vice versa shows you how far Monzo are behind on this even though it is a leader in fintech.

If Monzo introduce showing other accounts they are dependant on those other banks handling open banking properly. As we’ve seen with credit cards, there’s quite a disparity between providers when it comes to stability and implementation, so any dodginess reflects poorly on Monzo, not the bank providing the data.

I think it’s probably a wise move for Monzo to take this slowly. That said, introducing a few select banks in beta/Labs would be preferable to silence on the matter.

Isn’t TrueLayer supposed to smooth out these issues though?

Truelayer are also dependent on the quality of the open banking connection the banks give them. They can’t necessarily fix things that don’t work.

Aggregators which have a lot of working connections are likely using a mix of open banking and screen scraping rather than just open banking (unlike Monzo who have decided to only use working/reliable open banking connections). For example, Yolt and Emma connect to Amex using screen scraping.

I want a Monzo Credit Card. If this was offered I would close my high street bank and go FULL MONZO. I need something to gain a better credit score

The thing is, you can do Sonic brands well, the Premier League is the prime example

I can accept that but since Monzo are (were?) keen to follow a hub and spoke model it’s surprising that they’re behind the curve on utilising open banking even with a subset of institutions with working APIs. As you say the aggregators have a mix of technologies so Monzo could just implement some or all the APIs that TrueLayer has set up using the same framework as the credit cards and add other providers and features in the future.

If no one else had any integrations and Monzo had the current iteration of Connected Credit Cards that would be great but lagging behind is a shame. So much effort went into the credit card integration and the new nav mostly for this reason, as far as I can tell, so in the summer it felt like we’d get further integrations quite rapidly after the September deadline.

I guess I have an expectation, perhaps an unfair one, that Monzo should be near or at the front of the pack.

Here’s a thought. Maybe it’s being held back for Plus?

That is going to be the assumption about everything now

You know year in Monzo? That’ll be on Plus

Emojis? Plus feature…

Spending money is plus only. With regular you are limited to deposits.

But Paypoint is going plus only. You have to visit a Monzo branch.

In London.

I look forward, George Orwell style, to looking back on these jokey Plus predictions… Doomed, WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!

What?

Getting the [Pay]Point is Plus.

It isn’t really going to Plus.

Or is it? :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Nope, that would be a silly decision.

Maybe?

I hope we can use Monzo to receive international transfer in different currencies. It would add a great impact on Monzon.
