As this was almost a year ago, I thought it’d be interesting for a little bump and to see how well @tom’s blog post stood up to the year that was 2020…
So we start with some generic promises:
Our vision now is the same as it was on day one; to build a hub for all of your money. We want to let you see and control everything about your financial life, whether that’s directly or through a partner. If you have a question about your money, Monzo should be the first place you go. How can I improve my credit score? How can I budget better? Where can I get reliable travel insurance? In the coming weeks and months, we’ll start to answer those questions.
Emphasis mine.
Sadly, I can’t really say that Monzo made any tangible steps towards answering any of those questions last year. The credit score from one agency eventually made its way into the app (if you are a Plus or Premium customer) - but I can’t really see anything on improving your credit score. In-app budgeting, I think, was totally unchanged - a big pity as it really needs work. And there was nothing on recommending travel insurance (although Monzo did launch bundled travel insurance with Premium).
I think this is a miss.
Moving on…
We’ll do more to demystify credit scores and how they’re calculated in the app. We’ll help people track their borrowing health over time and work towards goals, like buying a house or paying for a course.
As I say, paid customers can now see their Transunion credit score in the app - but I can’t see any demystification or extra information on how they’re calculated. And there is nothing about borrowing health over time, unfortunately.
So a partial hit on the first part and a miss on the second gives us another miss
We’ll launch new paid accounts that give you even more from Monzo. Things like better tools to help you master your money and insurance that gives you real peace of mind while you’re away. Your feedback helped us understand where we didn’t get this quite right last year, and we’re excited for you to see what we’ve created.
This happened! Despite the p-word, we eventually got Monzo Plus and Monzo Premium! Big tick.
Plus, we’ll expand business banking: inviting lots more business owners to sign up, launching a web version of our business account, and building more features that help you achieve your goals, like international payments.
Business accounts were launched!
And there was a web interface for business accounts, too.
International payments were still a bit hit and miss, though. I don’t think there were any announcements, so that looks like a miss.
And finally, we’ll continue our growth in the US following the hire of our new US CEO, TS Anil.
I’m sure that Monzo US took on new beta customers, but there has been no big step change. And TS Anil became unexpectedly busier than he might have anticipated… I think that one is very much in the neither-hit-nor-miss category!
So a bit of a mixed bag. But given what 2020 had in store for us, I think that Monzo did relatively well all things considered. Monzo did launch a whole new product line (business banking) and two paid-for accounts - all while dealing with an existential threat to the business. And given what happened, I’m not sure that any organisation’s plans were unchanged.
So I’d rack that up as a relative success, all told.
