Due to my obession with fintech, I don’t think I’ll ever carry 1 card
Reply from Asda on Twitter … Finally.
Also to add. People look surprised when I tell them we do take Amex. Not as much these days, but a while ago people looked like you had made their day.
Personally I’ve never had a single issue apart from a reversed transaction that was caused by the merchant’s payment processor.
I do wonder why acceptance issues are particularly bad for Monzo but not other new banks
In fairness, neither have I (with Monzo). A lot of this comes down to “luck” in which merchants you end up using unfortunately!
I don’t know if it is necessarily worse - we have a fairly large customer base who use a diverse range of merchants. Issues are going to occur and when you have more customers you tend to get more issues
Out of curiosity, is this another use case for Curve? I’m half tempted to go to Asda just to find out.
Agree, I’m full Starling and do occasionally experience similar issues to those I read about on this forum.
It’s a bit annoying that a Mastercard isn’t just a Mastercard and that BIN tables needs to be updated by merchants, which some don’t bother with. But that’s not Monzo or Starling’s fault.
I think a lot of the problems are because of the BIN range… for example if I try to make a payment towards my PayPal credit account I can’t use a debit card transaction with my Monzo card, it goes through, sits pending for 24hrs but then always rejects… but if I try to pay direct from my Monzo account (via Direct Debit) it works fine…I presume PayPal think i’m trying to pay credit with credit…
paypal have same issue with starling, when I spoke to them its due to their system not differentiating between credit and debit mastercards
I’ve just been to an Asda petrol station and it isn’t just the ‘pay at pump’ machines, the booth declined the card too. It didn’t ask for a PIN or anything, just straight away declined.
The very least Monzo can do is send a push notification to everyone warning them of this if they refuse to put it on their status page.
It’s embarrassing for the customer and it puts the cashier in an awkward situation too. They had to trust that I’d come back while I drove away to find a cash machine
That is fixed now, I’ve been able to pay my PayPal Credit account with my Monzo debit card fine the last couple of months. Had the same issue as you previously.
Seconded. I always always have a second card even if it’s just a prepay card or something. Every bank has the occasional problem (a quick google found this: https://www.mirror.co.uk/money/breaking-natwest-cards-stop-working-13021288) and I would feel nervous only having one way to pay.
With a back up debit card I can transfer funds to it as needed or a small limit credit card.
A4 signs printed out indicating that ASDA aren’t excepting Monzo cards in the petrol station in Clifton, Bristol.
I wonder what impact this has on the brand for non monzo customers.
For sure! So, we could send people a feed item who used Asda pay-at-pump say 2 times in the last 2 weeks. However, to many this might come across as a bit spammy and it is also drawing attention to an unfortunate situation which isn’t something I think is helpful until we understand more about the issue and can give customer’s some concrete information.
Ideally we’d send the customer a feed item on an attempted authorisation at an Asda PFS but unfortunately as Asda aren’t attempting an authorisation we can’t do that
Could I just clarify that it’s not just the pay-at-pump terminals? I got rejected after I filled up and paying in the store
The petrol station I visited today didn’t accept either in the kiosk or at the pump.
That’s odd… my Clydesdale debit mastercard works fine with Paypal…
Thanks for the heads up… I did try in the middle of Feb and it rejected… ill give it another shot and see what happens!
Let’s not pretend it’s Monzo’s fault though. Asda are the company who’ve arbitrarily stopped accepting particular bank cards - it’s their responsibility to inform their customers.
I can’t see how Asda have the mechanism to notify every Monzo user prior to filling up at every petrol and service station across the country. Whereas Monzo do - everyone uses their app. Far quicker and simpler.
Having said that - i’d be interested to see what Monzo could do with customer data in this (or similar) situations. Like when BA was hacked and Monzo replaced the cards of customers who might be affected. If Monzo became aware that a certain merchant was having issues with their payment system for example, they could circulate the news to users who have had a transaction there in the last 6 months.
You’ve just contradicted your initial point. Monzo have a responsibility in this too but so far they’re doing very little to mitigate it other than a couple of posts buried in a topic on the forum that a small percentage of their customers use/read regularly.
It’s not good enough in my opinion.
I hate to say it but I’d have a text message from my legacy bank if this happened with them.
