So I’ve been wondering if anyone else has started sending a penny to their best friends, coupled with ‘friendly abuse’ in the description? I personally thinks it’s the future of messaging and like to call it #bankbanter. It’s most effective after a few drinks… sometimes someone will accidentally send a quid instead of a penny. Love it love Monzo
Ha, I really thought this post would be something else
I haven’t done this personally, but I’m sure I saw someone had their account frozen due to a dodgy reference/joke (not sure if it was just a rumour, but I’m sure it was on this forum somewhere).
I’m not sure how different this is to the good old text message, but hey, if it works for you!
Yes, my mates do it just to piss me off and make my feed look messy. This is why I’d like a ‘hide transaction’ button
Haha… it’s all pretty lighthearted banter between mates. But I guess we should be careful
… I think the money behind the message only goes to add some weight to the insults
It’s really annoying and also can be quite embarrassing for mortgage applications etc.
Wouldn’t be the first time that prank descriptions have causes payments to get investigated either
A friends partner had to explain these to his mortgage company when they were reviewing his statements. My friend was not amused at the time!
The description does not show on the bank statement, does it not? It just shows as a P2P payment, faster payment and so on. It’s not so much the references with my mates, just the annoying 1ps in my feed!
I didn’t say they used Monzo when I was told this story, I was referring to the use of faster payment references to send banter between friends. References appear on my RBS statements so it depends on the bank.
Assumed you meant Monzo given the title of the thread.
So I guess the answer to my question is ‘yes, this is common practice’ … but probably not a good idea . I think moving forward i’ll save this for special occasions only.
I’ve never heard of doing this. Clearly I’m not down with the kids. 🤦
I’ve had my friends put all sorts of illegal/embarrassing things as the reference in the past.
Hopefully it doesn’t come back to haunt me
I love doing this. Me and my mates do it all the time. I also love seeing if mortgage officers notice
It’s the modern equivalent of writing ridiculous names on cheques. I once wrote one to a friend called Nick as “Nicky Poo” which went through OK. I also wrote one to “Aunty Helen”, which was also fine.
When I split from my cheating ex and blocked him everywhere the only way he could contact me was to send £1 on Monzo
I’m being curious now; what’s Monzo’s official line on this? Would COP’s be able to block payments from certain accounts (if harassment happens) or would you be able to change your account number if requested/required?
Pretty sure my flat mates have sent me money labelled “Drugs” so I bloody hope not too!
Didn’t actually mind the money, but would have been annoying if he had only sent a penny
Fair enough, I just meant in general.
Cops can apparently facilitate this
So disappointed this isn’t a ‘YOUR Monzo’s so lame that…’ style thread…
However I have a friend who quite regularly will add references like “Refund for Thai massage” and the like. Ohhh the bantz we have. I almost LOL’d.
