Introduce a BLM variant of the App icon

And all of that is worthwhile. Someone doing that doesn’t mean they are underemployed.

In your opinion.

People getting outraged here about the possibility of Monzo giving the option of changing the logo to a BLM, is the reason why Monzo should do it, to help raise awareness, it seems some people still don’t get it.

It doesn’t take much time, it is worthwhile and consistent with Monzo’s values.

Lots of discussion and a number of votes…is there a specific number of votes this post has to reach before it is considered by monzo?

No. Monzo will make a decision on this irrespective of the number of votes.

As above

However we are seeing evidence of suggestions with 250+ votes being worked on, so whether that is considered a tipping point who knows :man_shrugging:

On the time front of implementing this…

If this was at the agency I work for it would take a couple of weeks purely because you’re “messing” with a corporate identity (the logo) and there’s a lot of rules and internal procedures that need to be followed in addition to this.

Irrespective of what it is, with companies of this size you can’t simply “knock something together” and throw it out there.

Also in case any of you need it clarifying, exactly no one is asking monzo to change their logo of the core app temporarily or permanently. Simply to offer a blm variant of the logo in the app icon settings, in the same way they already so it for those who want the pride logo variant.

There’s no reason to not like this because if you don’t want the logo as your icon you simply don’t set it as your icon. That’s it! If they released this I’d keep mine as pride but I support others who want a variant for themselves.

You want something to represent you? Submit it as an idea. You’re welcome to. That’s the point of this forum.

I do have an idea. Will work on it later today thank you

It doesn’t matter where it is shown, if the company are putting it out there then it still needs to go through the processes.

I did some work for McDonald’s once and you wouldn’t believe how many different people it needs to go through checking things like the curvature of the M, that the correct colour yellow is consistent across all devices, apostrophe placement and so on. We had to create so many versions too and essentially write a style guide on why we did it the way we it is and how it has to be used and where.

Anyway, I digress. It was just a comment to state that it wont be a 10 minute job where someone picks some random shades of black and it’s then immediately pushed as an app release.

In the grand scheme of things, creating the logo and adding it would not take long at all.

And as much as its the right thing to do it could also be good for pr which could earn back the 2 hours or whatever it takes to add/test

Oh yeah I totally agree that it’s not a quick job, nor should it be.

I was indirecting some people further up in the thread who believe that because something isn’t for them it’s not worth doing.

Such poor quality lol there are slight lighter shades on the M which is not clear here

I am absolutely for the cause itself. Can someone explain why changing their icon to a BLM icon would help? Is it to show your friends that you care? Same applies to icons of any cause of course. Wouldn’t it be better to take some action instead? Then you are actually helping instead of signalling? (and yes, I understand that you are able to do both!)

In my opinion, it’s less about individuals making a statement to other individuals and about monzo making a statement to it’s customers as individuals.

I don’t have the rainbow icon to show pride or support or anything, I do it because I like it and the fact that my bank chose to quietly show support to me in a personal way means a hell of a lot more to me than a tweet or a donation just for show and corporate branding points. They earn nothing from a rainbow logo except to show me support.

Thats a fair point :+1:

I use the rainbow logo because I like the look, it’s a personal thing and when I look at it, it reminds me that Monzo are progressive in their outlook.

It’s often the little things that make a difference to an individual, and it’s quite often people who aren’t a part of the minority/community affected that make the loudest of complaints about it. Which speaks volumes.

It’s also just one small step they can do to show their ally-ship, both to customers and their staff too. I think the latter is super important because to me it would not only say “Monzo care about the movement”, but also “Monzo care about the wellbeing of their staff” too.

It shouldn’t by any means be the only thing I would expect a company to do, and I’d expect Monzo to continue pushing for equality and diversity, beyond a small on screen logo.

I very much like the idea, and am supportive of the peaceful protests going on around the world right now. There has been far too little progress these past few years, and it feels like there’s an increasing realisation that things have to change.

There’s one part of having a BLM icon that disturbs me, however. Race is a huge area of discrimination. However, so are gender, sexuality, disability, culture, neurodiversity, religion, age and mental health - among others. I’d be far more supportive of having an Inclusion & Diversity icon that caters to all types of difference. Why not instead repurpose the current Pride icon to one that promotes inclusion of all these differences - including BLM?
