I should also say, that as it relates to transfers to Monzo, the source of any delays will usually be the originating bank, since Monzo have stated thar they’ll credit your account immediately upon receipt of money (except for outages, of course).
Just to clarify, only “topping up” by debit card costs Monzo a huge amount of money. Topping up by bank transfer is their preferred method of adding funds (after getting your salary/benefits paid in directly of course).
Each method does have a cost to Monzo, but it ranges wildly. For example:
Topping up £10 by bank transfer (if I remember right), costs around £0.01
Topping up £10 by debit card might cost them up to £0.34.
Just as a convienience feature (and previously necessity). They are slowly phasing out normal topups by debit card - they were obviously very necessary when Monzo was just a prepaid card (because you couldn’t use bank transfer back then, topup by card was the only option). But now they’re a bank, a normal transfer is their preferred method.
The debit card topup fees Monzo incures does include monzo.me, but I don’t think Monzo has any plan to remove it, as it serves as more than just a way to topup your own account, it helps people send money to friends and family.

It harks back to the days when Monzo was a prepaid card. Topping up by debit card was the only option.
When they brought out their current account, they promised that customers would be able to use it in exactly the same way, but they removed the top up feature.
There was some pressure from customers on the forum, and the feature was returned.
Just for complete clarity…if u search my opinions, I said months ago they should remove top ups completely. waste of money

You could be right. I was deliberately careful with my wording; trying to imply that the one action followed the other, but was not necessarily caused by it.
For the sake of accuracy, and as this has been stated by two different people now, this is not true. Originally (when it was Mondo), the only way to top up the prepaid card was via a bank transfer to Monzo’s account with your card id as the reference. This continued to work after card top-ups were introduced, and in fact it was the method I used all the way up until I moved to the current account.
The disadvantage of this method was it took until noon the next day for the to be added to you Monzo card. But I found it overall more convenient for my usage, especially as I didn’t generally need to add money to my card at short notice.
Also might not seem like great message for a bank to be encouraging credit card card top up with it likely be costing users card fees and interest. Wouldn’t it beike encouraging debt?
Credit cards are good btw not saying I don’t like them, just mean for a bank to be letting you borrow money to top up
