Ah - thanks Liam! Was hoping there’d be at least one slice left!
This was an excellent read. A dramatic opening, a powerful realisation in the middle and a comedic ending. 100% would read again.

My thoughts exactly
There was even a twist when they could remember one but not the other

On a broader note, how many banks are out there where you might get an entire forum - employees and fellow costumers - trying hard to solve your problem, and on a Sunday night?!
It appears to be retailer specific. I’ve tried a few times in Asda and it didn’t even scan until I unlocked the phone. Most places I don’t get the luxury of trying something that may not work as there’s a queue behind me, so not sure if it’s common.
Not sure we ever got to the bottom of the second one? Will there be a sequel?
I think having established that the kind of transactions in dispute could only have been made with the customer’s actual phone, which has been confirmed as being in their possession the whole time, the second transaction discussion is moot.
I think the lesson learned here is don’t close your bank account and strop off before you’ve established some actual facts.

Hands down the best couple of minutes I’ve used today, reading this.

What you’re suggesting is that someone else was able to add your monzo card to their google pay without you knowing. How would that even be possible?
I think we’ve established it didn’t happen.
Just a very quick jump to close your account!
Better than a Miss Marple that was!
I’m pitching the idea to ITV now. Midsomer Card Fraud - has a certain ring about it.

Any chance you bought something and got Cashback? Always throws me for a few minutes when I see a transaction higher than I would expect, then realise I got Cashback with it. Worth a mention.
Not sure about anyone else but I would really like closure on this before I can move on with my life
This happened to me with my Halifax Credit card. Someone managed to add my card to Apple Pay on a different device. I got an auto SMS from Halifax saying a new device had been setup for Apple Pay. I immediately phoned Halifax and they removed the device, no payments went through. Went to bed and in the morning I saw that I’d got another SMS and several ~£30 transactions had been made. I phoned again and they removed the device and cancelled the card, refunded the amounts too. They didn’t seem to want to suggest how this had been possible though.
But yeah, it’s pretty difficult to not spot this happening. The fact that the OPs device was used seems to put the onus on the user. I imagine it’s different in my case.
My guess is that they stole the details when I used it online. (I’d only ever used it online). They were perhaps then able to fool Halifax into enabling a new device as I seem to remember Halifax had/have the option to phone and speak to a human rather than by SMS. I’d booked flights so I imagine they had plenty of personal data to convince them. 🤷
Prequel or sequel anyone?strong text
