Google Pixel Discussion

That’ll meet the health monitoring requirements for a lot of people, although I’m surprised at the stated 7-day battery life for a screenless/control-less device - I’d have thought a much longer period. Maybe the battery is really tiny to keep the weight & physical profile down.

It’s good they haven’t locked any of the tracking behind a subscription, only need to pay the subscription if you want the AI features really.

Also included Google Health Premium in the AI Pro plans so a lot of people will get it included anyway.

I’m still trying to get the Google Health app - can’t easily seem to find it (official or otherwise) - might have to wait for the Google [EDIT:] Fit Fitbit [/] app to auto-update at some point soon.

It’s the Fitbit app, it’ll just be renamed in an update next week (I think that was the date).

The Google Fit app won’t auto-update, you’ll be able to migrate your data in to Google Health later this year when they retire that app.

From the bottom of the Press Release from The Keyword:

“The Google Health app starts rolling out to all users on May 19, when you can expect to see a new brand icon and app.”

No wonder I can’t find it yet…

If you download the Fitbit app today it is the same app just a different name which will change on the 19th. They have been testing the new design in public preview for a while now but think it rolled out to everyone recently.

Tbh not a fan of the new fitbit app. Find it overly gimmicky and the whole “OMGEEEEE you smashed your goals today, you’re the bestest” style feedback it gives you, just feels a kind of odd to me. I just want it show me health data without the saccharin encouragement.

Sounds similar to the workout buddy feature on iOS, start recording a workout and it interrupts your music to tell you how amazing you are for getting in a workout

At least that can be turned off and the health/fitness apps don’t have anything like that…yet.

This was the reason I switched to Whoop.

Fitbit and Apple Watch was way too gamified and it wasn’t that useful.

Whoops data and recommendations actually make me behave better.

Looks like Whoop are slightly worried about the Fitbit Air.

The obsidian colour of the air is sold out now, all other colours still seem to have delivery within a day or two of release

Why not the ‘GBook’? (Introducing Googlebook, designed for Gemini Intelligence)

Easier to say, could stand for anything ElGoog (Googlebook, Geminibook, Gotchabook)

Anyway… name aside… some very interesting concepts here to (conceptually) take AI into the mainstream. And if the hardware comes in the OG Chromebook Pixel footprint (with glowbar), I’m in.

What exactly does it do that a chromebook couldnt?

Is it just a gimmick rebranding with a bit of Gemini in it that could be on chrome os?

Nobody knows yet. They launched the name and a concept - with the promise of running an Android desktop with tighter integration with your phone. It’s a strong pitch - if they can pull it off. And yes, G’s history isn’t good at this until you look at the success of the Chromebook.
So a big, big gamble from them - possibly a way to try and ‘out-AI’ the Neo?

Pretty much.

ChromeOS could already run Android apps and had very good phone integration.

I think the problem was even after trying to rebrand Chromebooks recently with the “Chromebook Plus” range, people still associate them with cheap/low spec netbook style devices.

One of the main questions I have after yesterdays Android show announcements is how much of the “Gemini intelligence” features require a subscription to Google One.

Just seems like another step towards everything becoming a subscription. First storage, then Google Home, Fitbit/Google Health and next phone features?

I fear Apple will also follow suit when the new Siri/Apple intelligence launches

If I didn’t already have my Surface laptop and was happy with it this would be very intriguing to me. The desktop has very windows 11 feel to it and seems more “mature” than what we’ve seen with Chromebooks.

It looked just like ChromeOS with status icons moved to the top (similar to MacOS) to me

Maybe it was just the moody dark styling on the website that made it look different. :joy:

There was a lot more “glowy” outlines for all the Gemini stuff

Dunno if I’m alone in this but the Pixel Glow stuff 100% does not interest me at all. I’d rather they retained the temperature sensor on the back of the phone. I use that pretty often I’m feel under the weather to check my fever etc.
