Google Pay issue - Card won't add

I’ve recently jumped over to Android and I’ve tried to add a few of my cards to my Google Wallet. So far I’ve managed to add in Revolut and Zopa with no issues whatsoever but Monzo is a different story.

When I go through the process, it gets to the end and hits me with a ‘Cannot add card’ error. I’ve spoken to Monzo who initially thought it was a fault with the card - replacement arrived and still no change.

I’ve been passed from department to department and then advised I would be transferred to a technical specialist… who popped up a day or 2 later to ask me to remove the card and try again which had already been done.

I’m now on day 9 trying to get it resolved but it’s now with a senior technical team so just waiting on a response back from them but just wondered in the meantime if anyone else had came across this or if it’s just my bad luck

I could be wrong but I’m sure Monzo need to delete the token or something from their end when it messes up like this.

Usually moving phones, certainly iOS, there isn’t a Google token to be removed, but it’s worth the ask.

Checking your name and address are correct on pay.google.com can have impact, be sure it aligns to that of your monzo profile.

Nothing else I can think of that would impact it unless it’s a service issue that may resolve over time.

Yeah this was one of the first steps that they carried out. They initially told me it was a Google issue and the token advice was what Google had advised so it can’t be that.

@Carlo1460 name and address are all good too!

try clearing the cache and data of the Google Wallet app in your phone’s settings, before trying again also is location enabled?

Adding cards to Google Wallet has been an issue for me for a while. Adding from Google Wallet never worked.
Have you tried adding the card from within the Monzo app instead of from the Google Wallet app? Click on the card in the Monzo app, and you should see a black “Add to G Pay” button.

Yup that was the way I tried initially.
I’m at a loss lol

Darn! What about:

  • Turning any VPN off (if you use one)
  • Disabling PrivateDNS (if you use it)
  • Testing on both Wifi and mobile data

No VPN or PrivateDNS so I know that’s not an issue.
Tried both WiFi and Mobile data and both give the same outcome!

Think we’re all slowly running out of ideas!
Thanks for the help so far folks

When you add a card to Google Wallet, it will also add it to your Google profile.
If you go to Google Account Payment Methods page and log in, is your card listed there? If so, try removing it from there and try again.

It was there!!!
I removed it and attempted it again… ‘Couldn’t finish card set up for pay contactless’
So same as before :frowning:

This really is a weird one. I’m out of ideas. Sorry

Does it let you add virtual cards to your wallet? (if you have them)

Just checked there and nope - virtual cards give the same error message.

Is the device brand new; or just new to you?

I’ve had an issue like this before, I think after a few days of having monzo installed on my android device it then let me add the card to google wallet via the app without the contactless error thing.

is it a pixel you have? I think a few have been having issues with gpay on them lately.

How are you finding your monzo customer support experience?

No its a Galaxy Ultra so maybe a more widespread android issue perhaps.

Ive found support to be quite poor in all honesty. Hardly any updates and passed from pilar to post so zero ownership anywhere.
