FREEPOST MONZO is not always enough

As far as i was aware and going off what the instructions say…

“Put your cheque in an envelope and write FREEPOST MONZO on the front (nothing else!)”

By writing your address on the envelope you may have inadvertently given Royal Mail somewhere else to send it to, other than the Freepost Monzo address.

Not sure how would that solve it?

For the long answer: If you have a look further up in this thread that your post has been merged into, particularly the replies from @anon70847726, you’ll see why.

Short answer: the post office machine won’t accidentally read the return address as the sending address if it’s not on the envelope.

Ah, thanks. I didn’t know it had been merged. Makes sense now. I’ll try again :slightly_smiling_face:

I won’t defend this one - this example should work fine. It’s only return address on the front (as in the first example) that’s likely to confuse it. Most likely presented misfaced when processed in the mail centre, but that’s no consolation.

Out of interest, you should see two phosphorescent bars that were printed on the envelope by the mail processing machine - which side are they on?

The bars are printed on the back of the envelope with my return address on, along with the franking that is printed over the ‘flap’ of the envelope.

Thought so. It means it was fed into the machine misfaced - the bars are printed on the side of the envelope the address recognition system saw.

The envelope should have gone in with the FREEPOST MONZO side faced to camera, in which case it would have sorted correctly. Instead, it was fed in back to front, the system recognised your return address as a valid destination, and sorted it there.

This’ll work - the only downside will be that it’ll take much longer to return to you if the item is undeliverable, as it will go into special handling (Belfast, I think?). Can be due to damage, smudged ink, etc. as well as invalid address.

Valid return to sender (unlike the examples in this thread, which are missorts) are pretty quick to come back if the return address is written on the reverse, which might matter if you want a cheque paid in.

I realise that it’s a nice and simple message and kind of quirky to just write “FREEPOST MONZO” on an envelope and post it, but wouldn’t it be far easier to save all this hassle and just give out the actual address?

FREEPOST MONZO
= Short and easy message. But could easily get returned

FREEPOST MONZO
38 Finsbury Square
LONDON
EC2A 1PX
=Takes an extra 30 seconds to write but is going to get where it should

I know which I’d use. Incidentally, is that the right address for the cheques?

Freepost Monzo is the address though.

The small amount of problems are people putting return addresses which are then getting read as the address to send to.

I put my return in general as short as possible so it shouldn’t get mixed up and so companies shouldn’t be so quick to return to sender.

Looks something like

lastname 1/SW1A1AA (number/postcode)
