You can always freeze the card in app if it gets stolen
At the moment there is no way to disable contacless however it has been discussed elsewhere on the forum.

Not yet, but it has been requested few times. So right now:
Contactless and online payments on/off toggles were requested few times, but we didn’t get any further info or confirmation about them. I moved your post to the relevant thread, so this feedback is seen by Monzo team.
CA card doesn’t support magstripe at all so the lack of the toggle isn’t a big deal - I assume they’ll implement the toggle once the magstripe becomes supported.
Personally I don’t mind it not being supported
In an idea world magstripe should just be discontinued completely. Our Uni uses them for door keys and as a payment mechanism - lots of people have duplicates of a friends key’s so they can get into their building or whatever… Ridiculously insecure technology.
I agree, contactless is a nightmare, I’d just rather have a card without it. When Apple/Android pay come along for the CA, contactless is semi redundant anyway (for those that have the feature).
That instantly makes a card payment secure anywhere you can send with a contactless card. I’d never really bothered with Apple Pay, but the truly massive increase in fraud makes me think I’ll use it a lot more.
A chum of mine has just come back from Holland and says cards aren’t accepted in very many places, when he asked why, fraud was the answer, they want cash!
Actually, they don’t really allow offline transactions (offline authorisation) on online-only cards. All TfL transactions are actually online deferred authorisation, meaning they’re authorised online at the end of the day.
They do use offline data authentication to prove the card is real (but not authorise it), and cards that don’t support this (American and Canadian cards mainly) don’t work on TfL.
Additionally, the first transaction on a card (first tap in) will have a 2p online authorisation made before the gate opens just to prove the card authorises for something.
At no point though are TfL doing offline authorisation.
To be absolutely correct (and I’m nitpicking) they are authorised at your first tap in of the day for a negligible amount, and the presentment for that authorisation (with your daily spend updated) is sent at about 2am the next day
This is true the first time you use a new card, but after that it’s just one online deferred authorisation at the end of the day. The first tap 2p online authorisation only happens the first time a card is used (or if it hasn’t been used in awhile).
But yes, it’s all nitpicking at this point. The basic point is that TfL does not somehow run offline transactions on an online-only card (which is impossible), they’re all online transactions.
Ah. I have an Oyster with Railcard so the only time I use card is when I forget my Oyster!
Any possibility we can have more security options/toggles for the card? Such as the ability to turn off contactless and online usage. The Revolut app provides this.
I don’t need contactless as I use my phone for that and have a dedicated card for online use.
It will save me having to find the nfc antenna and drill a hole in the card😀
I’d second this. I would also quite like to steal the idea of virtual cards as well. Then all of my monthly subs like Netflix etc, can be debited from the virtual card
+1 for both of the above suggestions… the more options available the more Monzo can stay ahead of the game…
Anyone else as security conscious/paranoid as me and obliterates the cvv number? What better invite to online fraud than printing that on the card.
It’s a good idea. The only time I suffered card fraud was from handing the card over for car hire.
When you think about it they get your card, address, date of birth…
Good idea. Have a look at this thread for some past discussion on the issue:
And…
There’s also a lot of past discussion on this idea:
Including an indication that Monzo have been thinking about this (though no commitment to implement):
On my other banks I requested that I don’t have contactless cars because I use Apple Pay with these which are more secure. I would defiantly use this feature after Apple Pay was introduced.
It will be useful to be able to activate or deactivate the contactless to protect the card.
How do you feel about just freezing the card when you are not using it?
Hey @Timmy1986
Moved your post here as there’s been some discussion around this idea before.
Was speaking with a friend earlier who wanted a second bank account or prepaid card to use for day-to-day spending.
I first explained and showed the various benefits of Monzo but also ended up showing Revolut. When I showed Revolut’s in-app toggles for various card security features she totally lost interest in Monzo. It was mainly the ability to disable contactless payments that caught her eye. Has now ordered a Revolut card instead instead of Monzo
