Core App: Better payments

Did Robin address any of that here?

It doesn’t unfortunately.

But I’ve just tried something related to search as it was mentioned in the quote - (Android) - go to Payments, tap on search and it now shows you the new Payees hub listing (nice). Then without searching, tap on the top-left ‘back’ arrow. You’d be expecting to be sent back to the Payment display, from where you initiated the search but you’re not, you’re sent to the Payees hub and have to go ‘back’ once more to get back to Payments.

A bit of polish needed.

That’s how it works currently? For me at least?

(Are we talking about the same search button? Magnifying glass top right?)

Yeah, that’s how it works. But it should take you ‘back’ to the Payments display, instead of landing you in the Payees hub and make you have to tap back once more.

It seems a bit ‘bolted on’ but is early days (still in Labs!) - I can see that it has a good design and can be finessed.

I’m not sure that’s right.

Back once is to back out of the text input field in search, twice to get you back to the main Payments tab.

It feels normal and intuitive (again for me and my weird tastes).

I disagree with this since it makes the initial Payments tab screen much clearer, less confusing, and less overwhelming.

Also, watching a few people trying to pay someone I think the ‘Payments ==> Pay ==> select Payee or alternate payments method’ is the best way (small sample size though).

This is an interesting idea, which I think I like.

One thing that I think would make it easier to navigate between contacts in the Payees hub, would be having the list scrollable like the Google contacts app (or similar) where the letter you are on shows up on the right when you drag on the scrolling bar to navigate to a certain name.

Yes I agree it’d be nicer if this Payees page was simply the entire contents of the pay tab. I too would like to see monzo get rid of the frequent and recent tabs but also the menu of choices here which doesn’t belong under pay and just feels like it was stuffed in as people complained they were confused about how to do x,y,z, so there are now big buttons for x,y, z.

I don’t see why you have request under the pay tab, it should be under share, and move money is just another payment - it should be fine to pay yourself - i.e. under your own contact should be all your accounts/pots. There are too many choices and UI devices going on here all at once.

All we need here is one list of payees, if people want it sortable that’s fine to give sort criteria on a little button (recent, frequent, favs, whatever could be in a menu or a setting), but most of the time a search field is enough.

Nice to see it moving in that direction, so thank you to all for the work so far on this screen, it is definitely getting better.

@robinb One thing with the favourites list, could they be listed alphabetically?

That’s literally my only gripe. Otherwise I think it’s a good replacement for frequent.

Edit:
Also noticed you can now convert a monzo contacts into a payee that goes into the “all” list. And you can delete monzo contacts from the “all” list and they go down out the way to the monzo contacts list. Lovely stuff :ok_hand:t3:

I guess you can’t please everyone… I’d prefer my favourites listed by frequency…

I’ve just used this to turn some of my duplicate payees (Monzo user plus saved bank details at other banks) into one.

It’s great!

Very easy to add the Monzo contact as a payee, then use the new-to-iOS combine tool to get them saved as a single payee.

I think the wording of the combine confirmation dialogue might need changing though - it refers to combining “Joe Bloggs” with “Joe Bloggs”, before deleting “Joe Bloggs”. I knew what it was going to do but as a first time user you may get confused at this stage? I think it just needs to say something like “All the account details from both payees will be combined into a single payee. Confirm / Cancel”

Edit: Another question has just occurred to me. What will happen if these users close their Monzo accounts? Will I still see them as Monzo users forever or will the app automatically update?

Can I just say being able to set a default reference for a payee / account is absolutely brilliant. Thanks for finally putting this in place :+1:

As someone who fastidiously #hashtags transactions after they’re paid, not having to delete these out of a future transaction reference has made paying my credit card significantly less painful.

Don’t know if it’s just me. I’ve merged a couple of monzo contacts with their other non monzo accounts. When you go to pay them through either payee hub or “pay” flow, I don’t think the wording “move money via monzo” or “pay via monzo” respectively, is correct wording?

It gives the impression the bank transfer option isn’t being dealt with by monzo? And also a bank transfer won’t be “instant” even though it is 99% of the time. If that makes sense.

Maybe “make a monzo to monzo transfer” or “pay money into their monzo account”

Edit:

After going through the “request” flow, if you have a payee with a monzo account and external account (as above) you can only request money from their monzo account, no screen appears for you to share your monzo me link. Which if they use their monzo account as a secondary account, would be an issue.

Looking at the screenshots, isn’t the Pay button with “move money instantly” for transfers to other Monzo account holders? In which case, yes it will be instant, because there’s no other bank involved.

(Also, if one wants to be pedantic, even if the recipient doesn’t receive the transfer straight away, you’ve still sent it instantly, no?)

I might have worded that part badly. I was referring to if you chose to pay their non monzo account, if the monzo transfer is instant, as it states, how long would a normal bank transfer take?

Just subtle wording that could confuse new users.

Ah, I see. I understand where you’re coming from now. Maybe that’s something Monzo will just keep an eye on and see if they get any feedback through COps (I’d like to say that surely most people realise that bank a to bank b transfers may be instant or there may be a little delay, but then I remember the not infrequent case someone has come to the community to query a transfer not arriving instantly).

I think perhaps it’s also a little nudge from Monzo to keep the money that is being moved in Monzo, and by improving the experience for users, they’re also improving things for themselves.

You see this option if you go via the Request button on the initial Payments tab page. I think using the Pay or Request buttons to pay someone or request money from someone is the easiest method to understand and to use.

Edit: I’ve just checked and on Android you have the option to share a link even if you go via the Payee Hub, if the payee doesn’t have a Monzo account. I’d guess the reason that this option isn’t provided if the payee already has a Monzo account is because 1. monzo.me costs Monzo money and 2. it’s much easier for the user to send a link request.

Is this actually true? Certainly you’ve at least sent an instruction to your bank to transfer money  but all those times HSBC held up the transfer to perform ‘checks’ :face_with_monocle:

The money leaves the account before HSBC (or whoever) performs checks, and if they think it fails then they return the money to the account. So yes, I would say the user has still sent it as far as they’re concerned.

Not to be negative, but is it really improving things for users?

It has the potential, at least, to be very confusing.

I know that Monzo to Monzo transfers will always be treated differently, but these differences should be logical to the user and also allow them freedom of choice - not try to persuade them to use Monzo.

Especially if you are sending someone money, you have to be able to easily send it to the account they want rather than the account that’s easiest for you as the sender or for your bank.
