As for my feedback. like others have said it would be nice to notification to say you’ve just earned cash back .

on introductory screens make it a clearer as to what data you share.

maybe activate all button?

Thank you for clarifying.

Will the aggregators get all my card transactions (within the time limits you set) or will they just get my card transactions involving retailers who are offering cashback?

By the way, I don’t think Monzo is doing any worse at providing clear information on data sharing compared to other similar schemes. I think the large amount of feedback on clarity around data sharing is mainly because we want Monzo to do better than the norm.

Thanks for the update!

Just to be 100% sure - is that a rolling 13 month period, and not from 13 months agp onwards, indefinitely?

Thanks for all this info.

I thought the experience so far has been great. I’ve only managed to get cashback once sop far this week, but tomorrow I’ve got a day of travel and will be using multiple partners.

I think it would be good to move the cashback section (when enabled) up the screen on the new overview home screen (or make it pinnable so you can move it around) - or indeed listing it in the same real estate as pots

Well done monzo, and I’m good with the level of detail on transaction sharing. I’ve opted into similar things elsewhere and this is good detail to know

Ooh and I forgot about notifications, but I see that’s mentioned  a few posts.

It’s all card transactions for all merchants (within the time limits) - we need to share all card transactions for two reasons:

  • because the aggregators match purchases to offers, we don’t know which transactions we’d need to send - we could make an educated guess, but if we get it wrong then you wouldn’t receive the cashback you’ve earned
  • they aggregate this data in the way Nahla described, so they can engage with merchants to source great offers - they can’t do this if they only have data for merchants they’ve already sourced offers from or dont know which categories and merchants you spend on or like the most

Definitely agree with this bit.

I have a base line level of clarity I have come to expect from Monzo, and I think this one isn’t quite above that line yet, but I don’t think they are doing anything ā€œworseā€ in terms of data handling than anyone doing this.

I disagree, I think it’s remarkably clear and significantly clearer and more upfront/detailed than other schemes.

People that want all this extra info or clarification of every single possible permutation of their precious data need to consider the user experience of seeing all that over numerous different pages in-app.

Monzo are obviously going to distill the info into succinct, all encompassing summaries - which again, I think they’ve done well and transparently.

I think it would be reasonable to include a link to something on the Monzo website for anyone interested in specific details.

I’m using android and I can change the category of the cashback … but I don’t understand why they are not categorised the same as the original transaction… what’s the point / purpose when they don’t appear in trends?

It’s possible we might have forgotten about categories in all the excitement of building cashback :eyes: not saying that is what happened though…

please also don’t forget about how this shows up in the data export (a premium feature of monzo plus and monzo premium)

Do you think they should show up in trends? I’d expect a cashback withdrawal to show up as income on your personal account, but it’s not something we’ve actively considered yet for the cashback pot

Would you expect the cashback pot to show up in your data export, or only show up as a deposit into your personal account when it’s withdrawn (which it should already do :crossed_fingers:)

Could be cool to have a spotlight for total cashback earned, and another one for the current month’s progress e.g. Ā£10.50/Ā£20 with a nice graphic or something.

I think both options are probably ok. But for full visibility of how my cashback is accumulating over time, I would need to see a data entry when the cashback is added to the pot rather than just when I withdraw from the pot. In this scenario I might expect the data entry to include:

  • the ā€˜type’ as Cashback,
  • the ā€˜name’ as ā€˜Cashback Pot’ (or whatever its called… didn’t sign up in time to try it out)
  • the ā€˜description’ could contain the merchant information
  • then a separate withdraw entry with attributes similar to a pot transfer

Behind the scenes I guess it depends on whether that money in the cashback pot is strictly ā€˜mine’ prior to me withdrawing it and whether there are possible future scenarios where that money in the cashback pot cannot be withdrawn (it expires or something).

It’s not something I’ve given any thought to… But since they can be categorised they could offset the spend in that category instead of being treated as income. I don’t have a strong feel one way or the other. It would be good to view total cashback by category and merchant though :grinning:

Nice and clear, I’ll be opting back in, and as mentioned and I assume it will bel, it should be made clearer in the terms and app.

It’s also great to see these safeguards built into the contract already before our feedback, even if it wasn’t originally communicated.

Firstly, thank you so much for this detailed feedback. It’s really wonderful that you’ve engaged with the questions and are providing the answers folk like me were looking for.

Secondly, I’ve not opted back in yet, but I think I now understand the proposition and the role of aggregators. Reflecting on my worries, they were based on an absence of information, so the more you share the more I feel comfortable and the more I feel like I’m making an informed decision. I’m going to leave the offers off for now, but I’ll consider activating then on a case by case basis if I happen to be shopping at any of the brands. But now I think I can make a proper decision.

Thirdly, I think this sort of constructive challenge and engagement is what makes Monzo great. I think we all (staff and customers) hold Monzo to a higher standard, so this all comes from a place of wanting our bank to live up to, or even exceed, those. I think the challenge/response here is the Community at its best. Bravo.

Here’s what I do when I’ve got cashback from elsewhere:

  • I transfer cashback to Monzo using faster payments
  • I have a custom ā€œcashbackā€ category that I apply to the incoming transaction. (I use ā€œincomeā€ for my salary and have about five other categories that I use for different income that isn’t payroll).
  • I then usually move the cashback into savings (plug: it’d be lovely to tap into the incoming transaction and be able to transfer that exact amount to a pot or a savings account) which I categorise as savings.

Translated to Monzo cashback:

  • I’d like every cashback payment into the cashback pot to be categorised as a category I choose. In my case I’ll choose my ā€œCashbackā€ category. The default, though, should probably be income but for the love of 'zo let us set an alternative default! Or just create your own standard cashback category - that would be cool!

  • Withdrawals from the cashback pot to the main account should be a transfer.

  • When I move the amount into a savings pot, that category should be savings as usual.

I use Trends to monitor the amount of cashback I’ve gained and my global savings so I need them categorised separately:

Annoyingly, Trends is seeing this as a negative spend, rather than a credit (I’m sure @tjvr said this shouldn’t happen but it’s a minor wrinkle and otherwise works).
