August end of support for my phone's Android Version

Ask in-app chat if you want more reassurance. But if you’re going to worry about it, then your opinions are

  1. New phone

  2. New bank

  3. iPad/tablet

  4. Android emulator + webcam (this potentially could be blocked by Monzo’s security systems)

Because Monzo isn’t closing your account.

You’re overthinking it.

If you have money in your accounts everything remains as it is.

Go buy a new phone and your issues disappear.

How many times are you going to ask the same question and hope for a different answer?

Turn your phone off, go and tap your card, it will work if you have money.

If you’re this worried about it, which you should probably do any way, get a bank that accepts your historic phone or get a new phone.

My question remains, has Monzo given any reassurance things will work the same?

It’s implicit.

Yes, there’s help documents & communications to you about this.

But in all honesty, do you want to still bank with a bank that you can’t look at on your mobile?

So, as that doc says:

  • Upgrade your operating system version
  • Change the device you use to access Monzo
  • Close your Monzo account

How can you be so sure it’s implicit? Are they protected by the T&Cs?

You’re not going to be satisfied with any answer.

Buy a new phone.

You’d fairly struggle to get this now. Most are saying Android 9 or above, which will shortly change to Android 10 or above.

Every* high street bank offers OTP login for online banking, so they’d just need to bank online.

*I can’t think off the top of my head if any require access to a mobile app. I believe all are OTP.

I just want reassurance my pots will function the same and was wondering if anyone had hard evidence they would. You are all very confident but can’t seem to cite anything official to support this confidence.

The official advice is above;

Everything will still work if you want to just leave it, it’s a bonkers idea, but it will still work.

Why do you think it won’t work rather than people trying to prove that it will?

Because they are not held on the app/device.
They work independently of the app. You can remove the app and they will still work.

They may have higher Android version minimum requirements too.
Only solution is find another phone, many affordable phones out there that support newer OS versions of Android.

These have nothing to do with your app or phone. Just have enough funds in and everything will go on as normal.

Contact Monzo then.

That is why you need a supported phone. It is a you problem, you should read the terms and conditions and policies you agreed to about keeping your device up to date.

You surely know how you can contact Monzo, have you tried that yet?

You have had more than 10 responses about this, you are still asking the same.

Some threads need to be closed earlier.

Contact Monzo or close your account and take your money under the pillow.

Mortgage certainly won’t be paid then

Sounds like they don’t want to.
They have been given all options, they are not taking any.

There is a lack of information around the deprecation notice e.g. a list of functionalities which will no longer be supported. When you go to the webapp, neither pots nor the balance from them are listed. You are left to trust in a black box, not something anyone should do, especially when dealing with finances.

Your bank account will work (it’s not on the phone) You just won’t be able to access it from said phone.

Have you tried contacting your bank?

If you’ve worked as a software developer for a bank, you must surely know that the direct debit system isn’t contingent on the customer having an app installed on their phone. It’s simply not how the banking system works. They don’t somehow check your phone before each direct debit to see if an app is installed and cancel the direct debit if it’s not. I don’t know what more evidence would be needed, trying to prove it won’t be an issue is trying to prove a negative.

Realistically you will need to upgrade your phone. All banks will drop support for older devices and operating systems at some point. The limitation with Monzo is that it is app-only, barring a lightweight emergency online option. But if you have a phone old enough for them to drop support for, you will struggle with any bank as Monzo likely has better legacy support than most banks, so it’s time to bite the bullet and get a new phone. You’ll also eventually end up with issues with the web browser becoming outdated meaning websites will start to break, and other apps will drop support too, and you won’t have security updates either. You just have to keep up to date.

Monzo does run on severely outdated Android versions last I checked (same with most other banking apps).

I’m not sure when they’re going to be bringing it to more recent systems, but it seems last year they made the requirement Android 9 (which hasn’t gotten security patches for a while).

Monzo’s decisions on security are very arbitrary (as seen via the GrapheneOS thread), so we shouldn’t really give much credit to them. It’s likely Google removing support for Play Attestation and them being lazy to do proper attestation (but I’m not sure).

Edit: Seems Android 10 has been EoL since 2023 and no longer gets security patches either (although I’ll admit this was AI rather than me searching specifically), so I might be wrong on that.

I will ask it about Android 11 in a minute.
