What happens then? I’m worried my bills won’t get paid from my pots. Will my direct debits still work? Will my pots still hold their money? Will my scheduled payments still work? Is anyone else going to be affected and worried about this?
Everything will still work, as the bank account isn’t linked to your phone.
However you won’t be able to access the Monzo app on your phone, and as such you won’t be able to do any day-to-day banking stuff on your phone.
If you have an iPad / tablet you can log on there, and you can use your account like normal.
Alternatively there’s Monzo for emergencies, although this only lets you view your balance and freeze your card, nothing else. You can’t send money, view your card details etc.
Realistically, it’s time for a new phone.
I assume by Monzo for emergencies you mean https://web.monzo.com/ ?
Yes. The really ©®appy version of Monzo. But, you could technically manage your Monzo account through it.
It should also be noted @oznom that Monzo doesn’t offer the option to bank over the phone. So if you don’t want to upgrade your phone, then your best bet is to find a bank that offers telephone banking / full online banking, and doing a CASS to them.
This won’t include pots, or managing scheduled payments or direct debits etc as far as i can see
Correct. You won’t have that option.
Monzo does have to care about the security of their app though, and running on an older version of android that’s not getting security patches anymore just had a greater risk (how someone would actually do this hack, I don’t know).
It is a curious decision and certainly I remember making the decision to start doing all my main banking through Monzo wondering if I could trust really trust them like an established bank. I decided I could. Having worked as a software developer for one the main UK banks myself, I can see now that one of the things Monzo is doing away with is accessibility for all customers, which does set them apart from those banks, but not in positive way IMHO.
Monzo has to draw the line somewhere.
You have an old phone that’s not secure. You’re going to find more problems elsewhere eventually.
@jo what evidence do you have that my pots and scheduled payments will persist beyond August 31st?
I do find it strange that Monzo did not mention service disruption at all in the deprecation notice. They just cited “reduced features”
What accessibility support has been stripped?
Maybe you’ve used the wrong term here. You’re using an old device and banks have to protect their systems as well as your money. Removing access from less secure devices should and always will be top of their priority list.
If you don’t touch your phone for a day, does it all work? Yes it does. It’s no different, but for a longer period.
By accessibility I mean should be able to access my direct debits through an app, if not my smartphone any more, then the web app.
Because these all run via Monzo’s servers and stuff (I myself don’t fully know how this works, it just works).
If your bills never changed, your rent / mortgage never changed, your spend never changed, and you never needed to make payments, verify via 3DS, or chat with support, then yes you could not have the Monzo app installed, and it would all just run in the background.
Unfortunately, you need a new phone, or a new bank. Or to use your partner’s phone, or a tablet.
Or, somehow get one of those virtual android sandboxes you can run on windows, and have a webcam I suspect you could run Monzo via that. I haven’t personally tried that myself.
So really the only solution you’ve listed is find a new bank. I think that would’ve been a clearer message that the deprecation notice given by Monzo. If you use direct debits and you can’t upgrade your phone, you need a new bank.
I am wondering will my pots for my bills and direct debits persist until the funds run out. Do Monzo employees ever respond on this forum?
What phone do you have?
Yes
No, it’s not a support forum, but the helpful people here have answered your question!
I would like a reference to an official notice before I rely on a simple anonymous “yes” to pay all my bills ![]()
You can grab an inexpensive Samsung phone for £150-£250, and that would run Monzo for the next 10+ years. Because Samsung gives 6 years of security updates, and then Monzo supports the previous 8 android updates, giving you 14 years of software support. The Samsung will be dead before you reach that deadline.
Not saying cheap, because obviously we don’t know your financial situation. But there are inexpensive phones out there.
Your account isn’t being closed. Your pots and everything else will remain active, just as if you deleted the Monzo app.
Everything account wise stays as it is, it’s just your device not allowing you into the app because it is deemed no longer secure.
Your money, inbound payments, recurring card payments, direct debits and Pot balances/movements all remain the same.
How can you be so sure? If my mortgage doesn’t get paid I’ll have no way to check what’s happened the pot. Will you be able to help me then?
