Hey everyone!

Just checking in to give some updates on where we’re at and respond to some specific feedback (thanks for the nudge @BristolMatt!)

Firstly, a little context on why we’re doing this. Our last refresh was way back in 2019, when Monzo was quite different. Since then we’ve launched Monzo Plus, Monzo Premium, Monzo Flex and Instant Access Savings Pots, expanded our budgeting tools with Trends, significantly grown the number of customers choosing to take a Monzo Loan and lots of customers are managing their other accounts in the Monzo app.

Over the coming months, we’re launching even more exciting products and we need to make sure the app is ready to support all the ways that people use Monzo.

Here’s some feedback from when we introduced the new design back in 2019, look familiar? :eyes:

This process began a year ago, starting with research, concepting and testing lots of prototypes. More recently we’ve run several large scale experiments with hundreds of thousands of customers and conducted in depth studies with different groups of customers. Take my word: none of the decisions about these changes have been made lightly, or without some basis in qual or quant research.

The biggest learning here is that there’s really no ā€œone size fits allā€. The way we all manage our money is intensely personal and tailored to our own needs and situation. That’s why customisation is a super important component of the new design and one we’ll continue to evolve. We also need to help customers find it - lots of the gripes we see could be resolved by customising.

As of yesterday, we’ve enrolled 100% of Monzo customers onto the new experience :tada:

Now’s not the time to stand still - there’s lots of work we still have to do to make sure Monzo is the best place for anyone to manage their money.

Here’s a peek at what’s coming next :soon: ;

New account views
We’re working on creating new account views to bring consistency between the overview on the home page, and the focused view when looking at a specific account (yes, this means the carousel view will be gone)

Pinning external accounts
Soon you’ll be able to get a better view of the external accounts that matter to you, by pinning connected accounts to the card stack and we’re working on adding external transactions to the activity feed

Feed filtering
We want to make the Activity feed work for everyone - and that means choosing which transactions it includes, as well as how many.

Reorder sections
Everyone has different priorities for managing their money. Reordering sections will let customers prioritise what’s most important and get the key information they need at a glance. (I’ve hidden a couple of upcoming products :eyes:)

We’ll also allow spotlights to be pinned permanently on.

That’s just a taste of what’s to come, and (if you lot don’t find it first!) we’ll try to make sure you’re the first to know when new features are ready to test.

As I’ve said before; even when we’re not chipping in here, we’re always watching! The feedback and conversation is incredibly valuable so please do keep it coming

Wonder if investments/pensions is one of those blanked :eyes:

I recall the job adverts last year

Can’t think what the other may be, unless it’s the two above as two developments

If linked accounts could become free, it would be greatly appreciated :pray:t3:

This is great and will alleviate a lot of the complaints I think!

I know this is an iterative process, but can’t help feeling that launching with this screen would have solved a lot of complaints!

Looking forward to all the new updates and product launches on the horizon! As somebody who has been here from the VERY beginning (#161 is my flex), if you want to send along an NDA and enable all the feature flags I’d be more than receptive :eyes:

@ConnorPB thanks for the interesting update.

Are you aware Google Play App Store is still using images from the old layout?

One of the main issues that seems to come up is some (many?) joint account users would like separation of analytics/budgeting for personal and joint accounts. Is this something you plan to provide at some point? I know Trends has a filter list (similar to the Feed filter in your screenshots). This is powerful and highly granular but a bit cumbersome for regular switching of perspective.

Looks to me that you can select what shows in the front page preview, whether that is my personal/joint/Lloyds account and then if I wanted to see the full activity for a specific account, I’d tap into that account.

So no real switching as such

But when you tap into joint account would it give you budgeting/analytics that’s specific to that account? That would be my question. The new account view screenshot does show what looks like a new budget widget that might be account specific. But without having access to it, can’t be sure whether it is or isn’t.

Just bumping this again because it’s relevant :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Thank you for this great update @ConnorPB. Looking forward to seeing what these new products will be… I do wonder if ā€œCashbackā€ is one of those, since that currently lives on my homepage as a trialist (and an entire thread in the forums about the trial so not secret), but isn’t included in the list.

This will be great. Currently have the new view for Flex and pots and I gotta admit, it looks so much better. Can’t wait for this to happen with the individual account/pot views.

I hardly use my NatWest account, but having it show in the Monzo app is nice. Can’t wait for it to no longer be treated like a 2nd class citizen and being in the same view as my Monzo accounts.

So pot and external accounts are being added, and we can filter out the accounts/pots we don’t want to include? This is a BIG win. Personally, I love the combined feed, especially now that I have a Joint account. Seeing everything in list is great. If I wanted to see only a certain account, then that is still possible by clicking on said account.

I prefer the current layout, but I can see why others might want something like there mortgage at the top, so this is a good change.

Couple of things I think need an update with this new view though:

  • You can’t currently tell if a transaction you made was via a Virtual Card without clicking on said transaction. It just shows the ā€œpersonal accountā€ symbol. Could this be changed?
Maybe match the background colour of the ā€œpersonal accountā€ icon to match the virtual card? If the joint account card and premium metal card weren’t both white, I would suggest colour matching based on the card used (including holo blue if you have a plus card, or even those with the rare neon cards)
  • I discovered today that if you press and hold on a pinned account (but not the first one), the card will slide up slightly to reveal the details but without the action buttons. I love this, but could it be changed so that once it shows the details, it remain until you click elsewhere. This would then mean you can remove the ā€œdouble pressā€ to go to the account specific page (old view at the moment).
  • Now that I have a Joint Account, I find the pots list a tad confusing. Others have reverted to using a certain colour for all there personal pots, and another for their joint.
I know you have the little label underneath, but personally feel it’s not quite enough. Maybe adding the the same or similar icons as the activity feed would help.

I joined monzo just over a week ago and I was moved to the new home screen during the weekend and I definitely prefer the new home screen, happy to see an option for reordering sections will be coming soon.

I just popped in to say that I really don’t like this and neither do the three other people who use Monzo for their primary account.

I’ve had to hide all the annoying features like spotlight. Why does it show the balance of the whole account including pots? The whole point of pots is that it is removed from your balance.

The combined activity feed is a mess and I’ve had to move the joint account into ā€œotherā€ to try to tidy this up.

There is far to much going on and it’s messy. Why do I have to click edit layout then post to hide / show pots when this could be on the three dots next to the pots but.

…and I thought there were more than 4 people who use Monzo as their main account !? :man_shrugging:t4:

Many people want to see the overall total.

This is going to have more customisation.

I know there are folks out there who realy don’t like this new look. I wasn’t a fan when it was first added to labs but it’s grown on me. Most of the complaints from others look to be resolved when the new features are added (like filtering the feed).

Personally, I feel the new look is still half finished so shouldn’t have had the mass rollout yet.
