App Evolution (new look Monzo app): Feedback Megathread šŸ“£

Honestly, it looks basically the same as the personal account…

(with a greenish tint instead of blue in dark mode)

What I meant was once you switch to business is the Trends and payments tab specific to the business account or are they mixed with Personal account?

(Am interested if the separation of Personal and Business is only for the Home tab or if it extends to other parts of the app)

Ohhh, they’re completely separated  (for now?)

For what it’s worth, I totally understand your confusion as the UI/UX here does great (terrible) job at indicating what it does. The check-marks give you the impression that you can toggle your business account on/off from your home. I wouldn’t personally be opposed to this, but again thats up to personal preference and should 100% be a toggle…

IF, that is the plan… this UI/UX would make total sense and it would be the perfect place to separate/toggle joint accounts too!

The location of the toggle is probably not a big issue. I guess what it does becomes obvious the first time you use it. It’s just that I’d never seen a Monzo business account so wasn’t sure how things were separated across the entire app.

I do think it makes sense for personal and business to be entirely separate, so essentially app has a personal mode and a business mode. I can see how some people would like that approach for Joint too, in part because it would enable different Trends for Personal and Joint.

A very annoying bug that I’ve found with the new Home Screen is with regards to sorting your Flex account.

On the old layout, you could sort your flex account card to be between pots. For example, like this:

Personal Account
Pot 1
Pot 2
Flex Card
Pot 3

Since the update, you can only re-order pots from the sort page, but the app still retains the old sorting position of the flex account. As a result, with the example above, I’m stuck with my Flex card being in the middle of my pots on the carousel view. There doesn’t appear to be a way to change this.

I can re-arrange my pots, and the new order is retained, but my first two pots are always ordered before my Flex card, and the remainder after it. It’s highly annoying!

Eurgh. I haven’t posted in ages but this is utter garbage.

I hate it. So user unfriendly for how I use the app. Much easier and better with carousel.

Bear in mind I don’t use many of monzo’s features (nor do I want to). I just use it for banking, loan, pots (not general lots, only one to put into earning interest when money is spare) at current. I don’t bother with how good I’m doing this month, etc etc. Yet I can appreciate why some might.

Carousel is easy for my usage. Swipe for flex, swipe again for saving pot, swipe again for loan. Easy.

Now it’s like I have to scroll down to get to things. Whereas before, 2 swipes to loan section now requires a few presses to scroll down and then pressing to loan section for a full view.

ā€œPersonal balanceā€ at the top. That means nothing. I want to know how much is in bank balance and savings pot individually. I don’t need to know when adding them together what it is.

Press on card and go back to carousel, oh but then can’t see pots or loan because it’s been ā€œmovedā€ as the notification said.

It’s hideous and I guess will just make me move now it’s forced. Full carousel option should have been kept imo.

Really intrigued to see how much of the feedback here is being taken on board by Monzo and whether or not they plan to address any of the recurring issues that people are flagging up. :man_shrugging: would be great if someone from the App Evolution team could give an update. (@emmag)

General consensus seem akin to people wanting a simple version of the app to do their banking without all the bells and whistles.

Understandably so, from what the app was a year and a bit ago to now (new layout in Labs), it’s clearly too much for some to either handle or care for, which is fine, plenty of competition about.

Wonder if there is a way to have the two options without causing havoc back end.

Bar the ā€œboth accounts in one feedā€ type complaints I think it’s just noise to ignore tbh.

The old design was a mess, people don’t like change but Monzo have to deal the complainers (who most of won’t leave) and crack on with it.

It’s not even a radical design. All other banking apps have a home overview but some people used to like landing on a full list of transactions and now they can’t, but still see the most recent and other info. Unless you loved looking at all of the last 5 transactions I don’t really see what’s such a big deal.

The new overview is very similar to how the overview was previously and lots preferred that view, the new is a step forward from that.

The level of vitriol in some feedback for a Home Screen in a banking app is astonishing.

I’m not sure I’d agree. On the old way you could login, see your balance and a list of transactions on your account. Nothing more.

If you wanted to see totals you could swipe down and see a list of accounts/pots with totals.

I think, and it will take some time, this new design could also achieve that refinement around what to show and hide.

For some people having loads of different things to click and swipe on might be preferable.

I find that overwhelming. All I want to see is what is the total in each account in a list. Now, I know it’s boring and like mostly any other bank out there but there we are.

Loving seeing the evolution of it though. And, as has been noted, it’s becoming a deciding factor for folk as to whether they’ll stay with Monzo in the wider picture.

Isn’t the only difference the pots in list view and only the main account pinned to the top, flex etc down near pots?

I can’t remember.

Yes the pinned stuff, doesn’t change the fact it’s no longer carousel.

Why muck with stuff which already works? I’m used to the layout from when I joined. Then suddenly wham, a forced labour which for users like myself just have to do extra steps to do what they needed before.

It’s like it’s trying to copy some windows versions. A load of flashy stuff in 1 page where most is disabled from the off. You can only edit stuff within Monzo engineered limits so it’s not entirely customisable.

I want my loan repayments to be on a slider carousel tab, but now I can’t keep track of it as well.

It’s extra swipes and work. Why do I even need to see flex balance at top with some card tab?

When I enter the app, I want to access my bank and money in it, not some side owed flex stuff.

Too personal if unlocked if flex in minus, people can see it. I might go for a pint, get phone out and it’s the minus whatever at the top, hardly good for street cred. A number of scenarios may mean this should be hidden or well, not at front screen.

Had this new interface been the norm, I’d have never joined monzo.

You can remove Flex from the top if your street cred is that important to you.

I’d be more concerned that your homies would see on your activity feed that you’d been purchasing Barbie ā€˜merch’.

Sorry I should’ve been clearer - for me just a list of accounts and the total, so sort of like we have now with the cards, but then with a total across areas (for example, savings) and then if I click in I get transaction details and account specific information.

If you’re thinking that sounds like the old way then that’s correct. I appreciate change, and not everyone will like the old or new way (and monzo should absolutely not design to pander to individual preferences) but for me it was a deal breaker.

I find the new UI still too much for me. It’s nicer, and better thought out in terms of interactions and movements between screens, so kudos to monzo for that, but not one for me currently.

One thing I keep seeing is ā€œextra tapsā€ or ā€œscrollsā€ but they always compare it to a multiple swipe gestures (which is still a scroll), like, be fr…

A single tap to see all transactions vs a swipe up? They’re basically the same amount of work. Want more transactions at the forefront? Offer some constructive feedback and request more transactions or the option for us to increase the number of transactions on this widget…
(yes pls)

Multiple swipes to get to a specific pots or accounts vs a single swipe up? You guessed it, a single swipe and tap is still quicker, requires less work and you even have the option to pin your most used accounts at the top to access them with a single tap.
(other accounts when?)

Most (not all) of the complaints I see are just radio static coming from people that hate change for the sake of hating change. Half of the features on your phone were a change somebody probably didn’t like but I’d wager money on the the fact you probably use some of them every day because, you guessed it, were an improvement :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

The only criticism I personally have right now regarding the new update is how they’ve handled the rollout… It is far from polished and is in no way ready for primetime. They shipped it with planned features missing, the combination of both old & new together looks messy, the colors and spacing look differently across the entire app. It needed more time to cook and i think thats half the reason theres so much static tbh…

I’ve been with Monzo since the Mondo Alpha (user #116 :nail_care:) days and every update has been an improvement (even if I loved the old graph header). I just wish they left the update to cook longer by slowly introducing a more cohesive design across the app till it was polished.

One final note, while I’m in the mood to get a few things off my chest… after mostly lurking

You really need to stop with the ā€œso many people complainingā€ā€¦ are all these people in the room with us right now? I hate to break it to you, but you are the minority here. The majority of people don’t care in the slightest, like, at all. The people that care are the ones that either love to complain or they’re passionate enough to test things and want to help them build something truly special… by actually offering something useful like constructive feedback and suggestions.

Monzo are under ZERO obligation to listen or treat us like high stakes investors (but they do). Most of us are customer, like everybody else… and while you might not like it, the majority rules :woman_shrugging:

Feels great to get all that off my chest, I’ve had to stop myself from replying to multiple people on numerous occasions now…

Anyway, I hope everybody has a wonderful Thursday :innocent:
