App Evolution (new look Monzo app): Feedback Megathread šŸ“£

No, I’m referring to the carousel-like screenshot that was shared earlier. I did turn on the new layout in labs, so I do know that the accounts list is the new home screen. That’s why I suggested that it instead be configurable. I prefer something like the carousel view, which (given the previously shared design) appears to still be a thing within the new app. Unless, of course, that design will be added into the new accounts list, in which case I guess I’ll be disappointed!

I think you’re confused.

When loading the app, you go straight to the accounts list:

This is how the app opens.

You can tap your account and then go to the carousel as is in the old design, but I’m sure someone said that’s also being looked into (could be wrong).

The only carousel you’d have on the Home Screen in the new app is Pots view, which you either view as a list or as a side scroll box type view:

The redesign moves away from the old style app, because it’s a whole new redesign.

The teams wouldn’t have bothered if everything was going to just remain the same.

Ah, ok. I understood that this was a reference to the carousel being redesigned, but maybe it was just the pots in that screen. Pity, as the old layout was nice and open, but thanks for the clarification!

Aye behind Home Screen you may see some similar carousel types.

The monzo gods may be watching.

I am now a few weeks in to the new layout (via labs) and still not liking it as much as the old layout. It seems to trying to give me a bit of everything and all of nothing, which I find really annoying. One bugbear is that in the ā€˜home’ view, upcoming transactions in the activity feed are faded out as they used to be (which is great) but you have to click ā€˜see all’ to know when they are coming in. So if I have, for example, a Ā£100 payment coming in and a Ā£100 going out, I have them both showing faded out, but I don’t know if they will happen on the same day or different days, so won’t know if one will cover the other. Previously this showed instantly without needing to click on ā€˜see all’ … a big backward step for me I’m afraid. As others have said, it really wasn’t broken, so why insist on trying to fix it?

I believe that it was because for people who have 5 or 10 or more upcoming transactions, separating them out caused the recent transactions widget to be swamped so they couldn’t see what HAD happened, which, to many, is the point of the section.

In an attempt to rectify this, Monzo have tried grouping the things that have got yet happened together, which names it now effective at what it was, seemingly, originally for.

So for some, it was actually broken, and this is a fix.

Just tried the latest… seems to have more customisation than the last but…

  1. If you customise pots and uncheck all the pots from being shown, it doesn’t remove the pots section, it just puts a ā€˜create a pot’ icon there instead.
  2. The edit accounts page seems nonfunctional… it looks like the intent is you can drag things around but nothing seems to work. This also needs a visibility option I think, I really don’t want joint/flex to be on the front page.
  3. The left to spend is still a silly afterthought square off screen. I want the option for it to be front and centre, like it was in the old layout. For me if anything should be offscreen it’s the total balance as that’s useless to me.
  4. The ā€˜suggested action’ box is still taking up screen space. If monzo really wants to ā€˜suggest’ things to me, put it in the activity stream like they have in the past, where it can be swiped away.

All the transaction icons have a small red icon on the right hand side… a duck? Not sure what it’s supposed to signify, or is it some kind of bug*…

  • No, it’s some kind of duck. Got that one in before the comments :stuck_out_tongue:

This needs an option to show me what Monzo thinks is going to be missed (another button?) cos I can’t work it out easily. :man_shrugging:

Agreed, it would be nice to be ablet to show / hide entire sections, and reorder the sections, rather than just the current edit the contents of each pre-defined and pre-ordered block.

The edit accounts page allows you to reorder all your accounts, pin/unpin them, and show/hide them, with the following two caveats.

  • you can ONLY pin Monzo accounts, not external ones (Plus/Pro Open banking ones)
  • you can ONLY hide exteral accounts, not Monzo ones.

But you could unpin your Flex and Joint accounts by dragging them down to ā€œotherā€ and hitting done, and they’d disappear from the front-and-center as you open the page, to hang out down below the pots.

Don’t use it, never have, it’s never been even vaguely accurate for me, since most of my spending (99%) is on a reward credit card, which is paid off monthly. I do, however, quite like the spotlights in general (though it would be nice to be able to add more than one of the balance type ones, with different account sets selected).

I used to lose them when they were in there, since they flowed down with other transactions happening, so, for example on 1st of month, I get a screenful of direct debits, and… gone. I guess some will prefer one way, some the other.

It’s supposed to be a flare for which account it relates to - one duck person for personal account, two ducks people for joint. Can’t remember what it shows for Flex (a goose, maybe?)

Part of Monzo’s difficulty here is that they have a huge number of customers, with a vast variety of preferences / needs / opinions / usage patterns, and anything they do will upset someone.

What this means is that they have to try to optimise the app for the most common case user, and I suspect that one-account users, who don’t have pots, or linked accounts, or joint accounts, or Flex accounts, or anything else other than just their current account stream… are probably not the majority of cases.

Personally, it used to really annoy me when I entered the app and found that it was on my account stream, and NOT on the list of accounts and pots page, and I had to swipe down to get the page I wanted to see, so this new layout fixes that very nicely for me.

So I would challange your statement that they moved the current account page down a level, and complicated the home page, by saying that they brought the account list page (the logical home page) to the front, leaving easy, one click access to whichever account you wanted to inspect. It’s all about perspecives.

Of course, adding a setting option to allow users to set a preference for which page the app opens on for them could make both of us happy! (@ monzo, you listening? )

The app (currently) doesn’t have a home. Some people believe it to be the view with all the pots, some believe it to be the transaction view, either way, it’s not consistent and probably part of the reason why Monzo are doing this.

That’s what it looks like it’s supposed to do but all I see is a static noneditable screen… not implemented yet?

That would make the whole thing a bit pointless if true…

Two screenies below - you can see that I can move my joint account down from Pinned into Other, but that it does not have an eyecon to show/hide it. Also, it’s not (yet) possible to pin anything other than Monzo accounts, but it’s tough to take a screenshot of that not happening…

I just get a nonfunctional screen like this… It looks like you’re supposed to be able to drag things around but you can’t… it’s all static and frozen… can’t even change the order. There’s the prompt ā€˜drag an account here to unpin it’ with no indication that doesn’t work for monzo accounts, so I’m assuming just buggy right now.

It doesn’t have a default page when you open the app, I didn’t say button.

The home button does different things in the old design depending on where you are, which is the confusion they are trying to end.

If I’m halfway down the list view, home takes me to the top, if I’m in my transactions it takes me to the top/next account.

Home should be one place, which it will be.

It doesn’t, because there isn’t a home. Where it takes you depends where you are when you press it.

What I said above is correct and how the app acts, I had to turn on the old version to test it.

I think this is where we’re misunderstanding each other. This isn’t a settings screen, it’s a screen lots of people prefer and what lots of people consider ā€œhomeā€.

If you press home on this screen, it just takes you back to the top.

If you press home on the screen in the carousel then it moves through accounts, but if you only have one then this won’t happen for you.

There is no homepage.

Press down on the two bars to the right of the account you want to move, hold still, and wait for the haptic feedback. Then drag it down to where you want it to be.

This is the page where you edit accounts and will become the new homepage.

Think you’re confusing landing/opening page and Home Screen.

If someone ever said go to the Home Screen, surely you wouldn’t load up your transactions list :eyes:
