App behaviour in the background

Issue:

Use the app momentarily, minute or so. View screen time report and see that the Monzo app has been used excessively for sometimes nearly an hour.

Details to reproduce:

As in issue. Have added a time limit to use the app for at most 5 minutes a day to try to stop it misbehaving in the background. All that does it seems is stop me using the app at all as it has always reached the time limit. Just what is the app doing when it isn’t the front most app? How is a background app using screen time?

OS:

iOS

Device:

iPhone 16

App Version:

Latest

Screenshots:

Just switch off background app refresh. Likely your location being checked as part of security.

Turning off background app refresh is, at best, an annoying workaround for what is a bug - no other app exhibits this behaviour, logging screen time when not used. So whilst there might be workarounds none should need to be employed the underlying bug should be fixed (as it is also showing up prevalently in the battery usage)

How do you know it’s a bug and not intended behaviour? Jumping the gun abit about something you may not understand.

Have you rebooted your phone recently? 9 times out of 10 that fixes issues with weird background app behaviour. As a parent that has attempted to actively use Screen Time I’ve often seen apps randomly use hours of Screen Time and high background battery use even though I know for a fact the app hasn’t actually been opened e.g. 1Password showing as having been open for 2 hours on a device sat unused next to me.
