Amazon's "Subscribe & Save" payments always fail

I use my physical card details, and S&S payments always fail — so there may be some other factors at play here.

There goes my thinking… haha. Thanks for clarifying.

Physical card, always failed until this last payment

And here it goes again…

They need to fix it. It’s a significant barrier to Monzo ever becoming my main spending card again. The only things I buy from amazon are through subscribe and save, so I need to be able to trust it to work.

It’s not a problem yet, so long as I’m still getting cash back from Chase. But in the future, who knows.

I’ve no idea why you’re getting these issues - but it’s definitely an Amazon issue. Have you tried removing the card from Amazon & re-adding it?

None of my subscribe & save issues have these issues.

I have. Removed and re-added the card details on Amazon.

Not sure why this keeps happening.

When you make a normal transaction on Amazon, do you have to approve it?

Nope just goes through. Maybe for larger purchases, but it’s not often.

I don’t use S&S but can I ask all of you who are having these issues - are you having similar problems with other regular saved debit card payments?

I have about 10 monthly or 6-monthly payments on a VC and so far (over a year now I think) none of those payments has ever been rejected, they all go through on their respective dates.

For the first time, three of my S&S payments went through automatically and without errors today!
:tada:

(I haven’t changed anything on Amazon or in Monzo)

I encountered this issue for the first time today. This is something that should just work. I shouldn’t have to go in and reenter the card details in Amazon, just because I set it up months ago. That’s the whole point of subscribe and save!

same issue here, very annoying

I just had a subscribe and save fail this morning with my Chase card.

As mentioned this is not a Monzo, or Bank problem, it’s an Amazon/SCA issue, whereby CPA on a card have to be revalidated, or done in the new way to function longer correctly.

ie. Spotify don’t bounce, because they do it the right way. Amazon bounce because they haven’t updated to the new SCA rules.

If it’s an Amazon specific issue, how come I’ve not once experienced this with a range of credit and debit cards?

The vast majority of folks I see reporting this issue online seem to be Monzo customers. This is echoed within my own social circles. There’s the odd complaint with other banks and credit cards, but are so few and far between, are probably within the margin for error with the card being declined for some other reason and getting it conflated with whatever’s going on here.

Maybe Monzo are better at ensuring that CPA authorisations are adhered to as per the standard, whereas some alternative banks may be making allowances for Amazon’s CPA authorisations that haven’t been updated to be allowed through? :person_shrugging:

No idea, maybe @Dan5 or @alandoe could find us someone who could give an update on why this may happen, and if my assumption is correct, or if it is indeed a Monzo bug!

I suspect it’s this, but I wouldn’t phrase it that way, because the result of this for customers is a frustrating one. Whether it’s the standard or not, not falling back for merchants that aren’t on board is just frustrating for users. So whether that’s Amazon’s fault for not being board, or Monzo’s for not making an exception is probably down to your perception.

But if this happens to your Monzo card, and then you swap to your Starling card and it just starts working because they have a fallback or exception for Amazon, and Monzo don’t. That’s not a good impression to be leaving your customers with.

But then this doesn’t explain why it’s not every Monzo customer either. And there appears to be no reliable troubleshooting to make it work, or make it fail on the customer’s end.

Some clarity from a Monzo rep as to what’s actually going on would be nice.

Do most just not care, and don’t come on and say anything, and just go to Amazon & sort it, instead of joining the forum? Maybe. :person_shrugging:

Not a great perception for Monzo, no, but is it potentially more secure vs others? :person_shrugging: Not sure.

Some clarity indeed would be good.

I never had a Sub & Save fail with any bank until Chase did this morning, I should maybe asked them why they blocked it.
Amazon tried twice, once at 1:49 AM and then again at 7:52 both declined.
